Today we’d like to introduce you to Otto J. Placik, MD, FACS.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Placik. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The knowledge of the hard work it takes to become a doctor struck me at an early age.
My father and stepfather are both physicians. Throughout their careers, they have logged long hours of devoted duty but have remained captivated by the marvels of medicine and motivated by their intellectual curiosity. I followed their inspiration but chose a slightly different path.
Dedication is precisely what has brought me to where I am today. That ethic is what allowed me to graduate at the top of my class at Beverly Hills High School, landing me in the Honors Program in Medical Education at Northwestern University. This gave me acceptance into medical school directly from high school. As a medical student, I passed through all the medical specialties, taking interest in several. I found my calling when I reached the plastic surgery rotation. Having undergone a rhinoplasty at age 17, I already had a personal appreciation for this field. Now, I had discovered a way to blend my lifelong artistic interests with my passion for medicine. With a consistent goal of achieving the most aesthetically and functionally pleasing result for every patient, plastic surgery stands alone as the most inventive medical specialty. The wide variety of medical and surgical techniques employed by plastic surgeons composes a freethinking and minimally dogma-bound field.
The other pull I had towards plastic surgery was the dramatic and positive impact it has on people’s lives. Even though this is not a practice of clinically saving lives, giving someone back a positive self-image can be a lifesaving event, if not at the very least, a life-changing event, for that patient. A patient’s gratitude of being given back a healthy outlook on life can be just as immense as that of someone who has been saved in an emergency room trauma.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
One of the most difficult struggles I have encountered in my professional career was the decision to pursue a predominantly aesthetic practice which required transitioning from my former reconstructive practice. I commonly encounter a societal prejudice that is biased against cosmetic practitioners and the interventions they perform. Oftentimes, this is viewed as “selling out.” While reconstructive procedures have clear cut indications, aesthetic surgery does not. The decision to operate is not always clear and requires a complex decision-making process that involves getting to better understand the patient’s needs and desires. Sometimes this means making the recommendation to discourage surgery.
We’d love to hear more about your business.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Despite the fact that the dramatic changes will likely require surgical interventions, there is a great demand for non-surgical procedures. In the past several years, innovative approaches have been and will increasingly be utilized due to advancements in scientific investigations, discoveries and technology
