Meet Spencer Wade of Lift Conversions in Douglas Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Spencer Wade.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
For many years, I was an executive in the finance industry where I made my name and fortune in South Florida. When the housing bubble burst, I found myself standing amid the wreckage wondering why I had ever entered the industry in the first place. I decided to make a change and, after receiving an IT degree, I started Lift Conversions. Today, we’re a full-service digital marketing agency with a focus on helping small to mid-sized businesses establish themselves online. We take a holistic approach to digital marketing with all of our efforts geared toward producing the most effective search marketing campaigns possible.

At the end of the day, we treat clients differently than most. Our whole philosophy is based on educating and empowering our clients to make the best decisions possible for their bottom lines.

We see ourselves retiring alongside our clients – not just cashing their checks. That’s why we don’t force contracts on people. It’s why we don’t “rent” solutions.

When a client comes to us, everything we do is fully explained, completely transparent, and, when payment is made, owned outright by them. That’s why we’ve never made a sales call – we don’t have to.

Has it been a smooth road?
No startup can say they’ve never run into a problem and if they’re being honest with themselves, most would admit that some of the blame for troubles can be attributed to their own mistakes – either in communication, documentation, or implementation.

That’s just a part of life. We experienced growing pains with our paperwork and invoicing, but, luckily, we were able to adapt and never experience the same issue twice.

After years of improving, we’ve pretty much prepared for any eventuality that may arise, however, those preparations still can’t combat the single biggest challenge we face – bad history with marketers.

It’s a shame that so many companies enter this vertical only to bleed clients dry with poor performance, excessive excuse-making, and blatant bad business practices. We’ve actually had to create a strategy specifically for assisting clients who’ve been misled by less-than-reputable companies. The single biggest struggle we face is the emotion and mistrust brought to our desks by businesses whose livelihoods are at stake due to dealing with unscrupulous agencies. They are the struggle and it’s getting worse every single day.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
The simple answer is Chicago is not for everyone. In fact, it’s probably not for most. The area’s saturated with fly-by-night companies who have no compunctions about being dishonest or destructive. How many other cities will you work in where every fifth call you receive is from a business being blackmailed into paying for something they should have owned outright from day one? How many places will you find agencies owning businesses domain names as if it’s the proper way to do business?

If a new marketer asked me if this were the right place I would say no and do so without hesitation. For most, a city with more interest in holding businesses accountable for their actions would be better. That’s definitely not Chicago. Until Chicago, and those of us in the industry, begin calling these companies onto the carpet for their actions, and using reviews and ratings to help businesses avoid these leeches, the city will continue to suffer daily from black-boxing and purposefully-misleading agreements leading to renting instead of owning.
