Today we’d like to introduce you to Drew Mauck.
Drew, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I accepted a PR job at a boutique agency in 2001, right as the economy was climbing out of the tank, and after nearly a decade of dutiful employment, I branched out and started 3Points. I did this so that I could be less formal and create a fast-moving and flexible business, one with little internal bureaucracy but producing consistent output.
It’s been an incredible ride – we’ve seen steady growth each year, and that has enabled us to expand beyond where we started (at the intersection of trading and technology) to take on other tech clients, as long as they have a Chicago presence.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
If the road is smooth, you aren’t pushing the pace or really challenging yourself and others. So no, it hasn’t been smooth, but each bump in the road is an opportunity to accumulate wisdom. Reaching scale in professional services is rarely easy, especially when you feel strongly about premium service delivery and exceptional effort.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the 3Points Communications story. Tell us more about the business.
We offer earned, owned, and social media services to our clients, which fall into three general practice areas: FinTech, HR Tech, and Chicago Tech. We’re very proud that our clients treat us as their partners and value the relationship we build with them, not just viewing us as a PR vendor. I’m proud that our clients welcome us into their offices, and that we work cheek by jowl with many of them. When we’ve had full immersion in a client’s culture and business strategy, we are really tough to beat.
The mental toughness of our people sets us apart. We seek physical challenges, e.g., intense fitness, that hone our mental toughness as well, so that we can constantly push ourselves to perform at a high level.
