Thanks for sharing your story with us Evana. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Just as I was entering middle school my father injured his back and he was in a great deal of pain and medication was not helping him in any way. For months, he was in agony, unable to work and function in life. He discovered chiropractic and within a few months he was like his old self. My father raved about how much better he felt and how chiropractic care saved his life. Seeing what a dramatic difference chiropractic care made on my father guided me to where I am today as a Chiropractic Physician.
I was raised in Lincolnwood and have resided in the community most of my life. I attended Lincoln Hall Middle School in Lincolnwood and Niles West High School in Skokie during my formative years. Since I enjoyed the community so much I chose to stay close to home and attend Loyola University. I majored in Biology and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences in 2003. After Loyola, I attended National University of Health Sciences in Lombard, IL where I received my Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 2007.
After graduating from National University of Health Sciences, I practiced in the Western suburbs for two years. My dream was to open a practice in Lincolnwood so I could share my vision of holistic Chiropractic health care for the whole family. Having a practice in Lincolnwood is very gratifying for me because I am able to work in such a great community. I became fortunate enough to expand my practice into Edgebrook in 2015. I continue to reach out to these communities and surrounding neighborhoods to share with them that there is an alternative to the current standard of care.
Has it been a smooth road?
Opening up a business in Chicago in 2008 was not a smooth ride. There were trials and tribulations along the way. However, each obstacle and struggle allowed me to learn and experience what it takes to be a successful business owner. When I first graduated with my doctorates I immediately went to 10 different banks and applied for business loans and was denied 10 different times. That did not stop me. I had a vision and perseverance to open a clinic in Lincolnwood. So I asked my parents for help. After they read over my business plan and saw how determined I was to get this clinic going they decided to fund it. I could not have been more grateful!
Even though I had the funding now came the hard part, where do I start? There was no manual or person who had the step by step instructions on how to open up a clinic and be successful at it. All I had was my vision and determination to make this work and I went with that. I trusted that if I was a good doctor everything else would fall into place.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Lincolnwood Chiropractic Health Center story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a Chiropractic Physician and I specialize in the central nervous system. Yes, I adjust but it is more than that. Each malposition of the spine is a stress on the spinal cord. Each prolonged stress on the cord leads to a form of dis-ease that leads to a condition that manifests into an illness. At Lincolnwood Chiropractic Health Center, we take into account the whole body. I look at every joint in the body and determine if it is healthy with proper movement.
We spend time with our patients and we listen to them. I address not only the symptoms but the cause and the root of the problem. Our patients learn the fundamentals of how to care for their bodies and spines. They appreciate that I take the time to educate them on their ailments and provide options at home and workplace to prevent pain and discomfort.
My goal is not to adjust a million people rather to educate each one on the importance of chiropractic care in their daily lives.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I have noticed with our patients they want options. The times of taking a pill for this or that are not sufficient enough for them. Patients are more educated and have resources at their fingertips and know that taking a pill has adverse side effects. Patients seek physicians who have knowledge of alternative options for their ailments and want preventive medicine not catastrophic. Chiropractors have this knowledge and are the avenue for this shift. My colleagues and I have the tools to make this change and allow for a healthier community. Only 9-10% of the US population uses Chiropractors. With the social media and video streaming age we live in there is a greater exposure to our profession and people will seek this option.
