Today we’d like to introduce you to Jord’an Helmick and Julia Tarnorutskaya.
Jord’an and Julia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Jord’an: I am 36, the mother to an amazing 5-year-old boy and spouse of an incredible man for 13yrs. I started doing massage because I wanted to help my mother with her migraine headaches. So in 2001, I decided to take a massage class. I was amazed and intrigued from day one! The human body was so complex and diverse. I had found something I understood and enjoyed. Something that makes people happy and brings comfort and relief. Something new to learn and keep my attention everyday! And, I could make money doing it! Life should be enjoyed! It should be lived and spent with family and loved ones, not slaving away at a place that only pays the bills. With Massage Therapy, I work to live, not live to work. And I love what I do, so work almost seems like play!
Julia’s first experience with massage started as an infant in former USSR where she received treatment for the symptoms of Torticollis, not knowing then, that it was her calling in life. As her childhood passed she continued to receive massages on occasion, “Life is a beautiful thing, and the things you love will come back to you.”
Time and again, massage shows up in Julia’s life. After an accident, or a hard day at work, a friend asking for their back to be rubbed. Time and practice created Julia’s love of giving a massage to others.
“Good things come in small packages, like children.” Julia has a daughter, as well. Nurturing and touching our children comes naturally to most of us. It did so for Julia, and it kept bringing her back to massage. That started her massage career in Everest College in 2009.
Julia’s love for the intricate workings of the body drew her to work with athletes, for the last eight years. While working with some of her favorite clients, and interesting question kept coming up. Pediatric Massage; is it available, and can you please work on our kids? It was whether their child was athletic, or because the child needed to relax in a different way than video games.
Julia’s ideal life is a happy and healthy family by providing a variety of massage services. Now she’s also offering infant and pediatric massage for a longer and healthier life. Her hopes are to help people achieve relaxation, which in turn, leads to better health and well-being.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While I was in school, I started a small business out of my parents’ home and kept that practice for 10 years. Since 2005, I have worked at a Day Spa, a traveling massage company that catered to musicians backstage at their venues and at a gym. But I have always dreamed of having my own studio to work out of. A place of serenity and healing. A place to call my own. But starting a small business on my own wasn’t possible without a partner. I could only think of one person responsible enough and only one person that had the same passion for Massage Therapy, Julia Tarnorutskaya. We spent over a year planning, developing and getting J2 Massage open. Our first month open was better than projected. I could cry! I am truly living the dream! I hope business continues because then more people will have had the opportunity to receive relief from their stresses and pains, and have a little more knowledge and understanding of what Massage Therapy truly is.
The journey to find the perfect location was not easy. Many hours on the computer, making phone calls and driving around. There were cancelled contracts and failed locations. Not to mention the different ordinances and laws in each town to operate a massage establishment. But all the small steps led us to where we are today. Now it’s our floor and we’re taking the lead!
