Today we’d like to introduce you to Michal Jaworski.
Michal, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been passionate about film for quite some time. My first attempts with film production were while I studied philosophy, sociology and journalism in Germany, where I was a part of a team working on documentaries for a German TV station. I was born and raised in Poland where I came back to after I graduated. While in Poland, I worked as a free-lance journalist at one of a major Polish TV stations for a couple of years but it happened so that in 2003 I immigrated to the United States where I started developing my professional career from scratch … The beginning were tough but little by little I managed to open my own company, Variete Productions which I founded a few years ago. I mainly work with artists and local businesses producing music videos, corporate videos, commercials, and sometimes do free-lance work for European TV stations. I really enjoy what I do, which is mainly communicating my and my clients’ ideas through moving pictures. It seems that nowadays that is how we communicate in our contemporary society, through images, and that, if done well, can be very powerful.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As I mentioned before, I’m a first-generation immigrant so at the beginning everything here was so new and different from my life in Europe. My English was very basic when I came here so that in itself was a huge struggle. The beginnings were very hard and it took me some time doing all kinds of jobs before I was able to get back to film and video production.
Please tell us about Variete Productions.
We are doing all kinds of productions such as simple testimonial videos, corporate videos, music videos, and documentaries. My business covers many layers of the video production process, from writing scripts, through cinematography, video editing to color grading. Each part of the production process is very important and we invest equal amount of time and attention into each of them. I think that my upbringing and education in a different culture make my work aesthetically unique. It seems that the industry appreciates that as I won a few awards for my music videos and commercials. Some of my video productions have over 30 million views on YouTube.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nothing, really.
