Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Wright.
Jonathan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Like most college kids, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I saw friends and relatives getting up every day and going to work at jobs they didn’t really like. I knew I didn’t want that for myself, and I knew I wanted to help people. I wanted to do something that would make a difference.
Then a man from my dad’s church said he had an opening for a data entry position at a hearing center. While working there, I saw the patients’ faces as they left the office and the complete gratitude they gave the hearing specialist. He was helping people. He was giving people their hearing back.
I watched this man every day make a difference in people’s lives. One day, a woman came in and was fitted with hearing aids for the first time. As she walked out of his office, I saw tears of joy rolling down her face. She hadn’t been able to hear or understand people for a very long time. It was a very emotional moment, and one that stuck with me and led me to learn how to help people and make my own contribution to the community. This was the day I realized I could go to work every day and feel good about what I was doing.
After working with a U of I professor and Ear, Nose and Throat surgeon for six years, my passion continued on as I opened my two locations in Homer Glen and Burr Ridge. I decided to take my passion further by partnering with Bill and Tani Austin, founders of the Starkey Hearing Foundation. The foundation fits and gives away more than 100,000 hearing aids annually and, as a member of President Clinton’s Global initiative, has pledged to fit one million hearing aids this decade.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has not always been a smooth one. Getting your name out there was the hardest thing to do. Becoming the leading dispenser of hearing instruments and the premier hearing healthcare facility in the entire south suburban region didn’t come quickly.
