Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Allar.
Rachel, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in Detroit, MI, my mother homeschooled me and my 2 siblings all 12 years. My father was a professional bowler and retired his dream when I was born to provide the best possible life for me and our family. He is the hardest working person I know and still works 12 hour shifts in downtown Detroit to this day to provide for the people he loves. I have always been inspired by him and the rest of my family and began my college career early while I was still in high school. I finished my degree in Massage Therapy at 19 and then immediately began grad school at Palmer College of Chiropractic. I absolutely loved it and loved the opportunity it gave me to help people in a really amazing way. I graduated at 23 with my Doctorate in Chiropractic and moved to Chicago to get my license and start a practice. I worked extremely hard at other chiropractic offices in Chicago until I was finally able to open my own location and help people with a membership style chiropractic office. I always take care of my clients as I would my own family, I see the impact that a healthy brain and nervous system can provide for not just my clients but a community and am passionate about education on mental health and chiropractic.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My practice that currently runs on Diversey is nothing but a decade’s worth of extremely hard work and much sacrifice. I’m often up at 4 or 5am, sometimes working till midnight, my limited free time is exercise to keep myself healthy and functional, like Jiu Jitsu and weightlifting. I haven’t owned a TV in about 7 years, and typically can’t name the latest movie or song on the radio. I’ve stayed extremely focused on my goals and I’ve sacrificed any social life for extra seminars, classes and education to increase my knowledge and better serve my community. During grad school I broke my leg and then also ended up in a bad car accident that cost me several classes and some board exams. I recently made a post describing the years in a nutshell. 8 years of school, 7 board exam retakes, 2 licenses hold ups which cost 2+ years of added waiting, and 1 chiropractor who told me to move out of state because I would never make it here, no matter how many failures, I don’t believe in quitting. I absolutely love my job and know I have an opportunity to help so many people with what I do each day and despite the long days, sleepless nights, endless exams and time sacrificed away from friends and family I would do it all over again in a second, I am so grateful for the people that God sent to help me make it through it all , from my family and friends far away to new friends scattered around the country, security guards, janitors and fellow coworkers that gave me rides back and forth, bought me a meal, and encouraged me, I think about these people every day and they inspire me to keep going.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Allar Chiropractic story. Tell us more about the business.
I am chiropractor that specializes in enhancing the body’s own natural ability to heal, function, and perform at its optimal level. As I explain to my clients when they first come in that while yes chiropractic can potentially help reduce their pain it can actually do so much more by enhancing the body’s brain function. Improving the blood flow and oxygen to the brain as well as clearing the nerve pathways between brain and body. This is often like taking a low Wi-Fi signal with 2 bars to full strength signal with unlimited data downloading at high speed.
Everyone walks around and may feel fine or not in pain but the POTENTIAL for them to FUNCTION better, and improve their mind and body is a very real opportunity that chiropractic offers. I currently run a cash only monthly membership practice that allows people the freedom to get adjusted as much as they can in a month without extra fees. Just pay an individual, couple or family membership and come in at least once a week or more to keep the body healthy functioning and constantly improving. It keeps it simple and allows my clients to stay healthy, happy and strong without financial stress for life’s circumstances. In a field where there is a lot of emphasis on pain reduction for musculosketal complaints I like to point my clients in a more positive direction and show them how they can reach their goals, their potential, and improve their quality of life beyond just living pain free. In addition to helping chiropractic reach everyone to improve their lives, I also specialize in Jiu Jitsu athletes and their unique sport with educational content on Facebook, BJJ Chiro. More exciting things to come for these athletes!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t think luck has anything to do with my life, I have had some fairly “unlucky” type circumstances but that doesn’t mean you cannot still succeed. I think you need to keep good people around you who encourage, support and point you in the right direction. My mom is always praying for me and my dad always has this saying he says, PMA. Positive Mental Attitude. When things are good or bad I just try to remember all their good values they have given me and focus on how I can help more people around me or what I can do to stay humble and give back. Doesn’t mean I always succeed or have the right answer, but I am so thankful for the support group around me to guide me when I fall and encourage me on the right path.
