Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Stone.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jamie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always had a love for animals, but my real passion for dogs began when I adopted the love of my life, Finley. He is now almost six years old and I have had him since he was two months.
After adopting Finley, I saw an ad for an assistant manager for a specialty dog store. I got the job and furthered my love and knowledge of dogs. I learned a lot about nutrition and the overall health of dogs. It was such a wonderful feeling to be helping dogs live a healthier and longer life with the knowledge I was able to pass on to their owners. The store I was at also had dog grooming, which got me thinking, not only can I apply my love and knowledge for dogs in the nutrition area, but maybe I should learn to groom so that I can help them inside and out! So, that is what I did. I went to an amazing grooming school in Chicago and became the best dog groomer I could be. After school, I went back to the same shop I had managed and became a groomer. A few months had past when I began to think about opening my own shop. I felt that while I was at a very nice location, there were things that I just did not agree with. I want to make dogs as comfortable as I can. Some dogs can be a little confused and scared during the grooming process, and I believe that it is my job to make them feel more at ease. Unfortunately, that is not always how some of these chains look at it. They see dollar signs. Book them up, get them in and out as fast as possible. There is a lack of compassion and safety that I have seen, and it breaks my heart. It is amazing how, with a little love and understanding, you can turn an unsure pup into a more relaxed and trusting customer!
So, that is what I did. I found a location, got all the tools I needed, and began my journey. It has been just over a year now that my shop has been open, and we have had a blast! From being able to meet and groom such a diverse and sweet group of fur babies, to creating lasting connections and trust with their human parents.
I feel blessed to have this chance to run my own business doing something I love so much, and working with dogs who I adore.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Unfortunately, I began my journey with a partner, and that partnership did not work from the get go. Our work ethics were not on the same page. For a while, I had to let give up my control over many issues because she owned 51%. During that time, the bank account was depleted, bills were not getting paid, and clients were not always treated as priority. I have now gained 100% of business shares, and am working very hard every day to fix those issues. I am happy to report that with a lot of work, all of those issues have been addressed and are in good standing now as I continue to put everything I have into my business.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a dog, and cat grooming salon. I also sell toys, treats, chews, collars, leashes, and apparel. I hope to expand my inventory to include food in the future. Everything I sell, is made in the U.S., excluding some of the collars and leashes.
We are first, and foremost a grooming salon, where safety is my number one priority. Our feedback from customers has been outstanding. We specialize in all breeds and patterns. I think that what truly sets us apart is our genuine love and concern for your pet. We do not treat grooming like an assembly line. Each dog is an individual that we will give as much time and patience to as needed. The staff is well trained and compassionate.
What were you like growing up?
I was outgoing as a child. I liked to be the center of attention. I loved music and began singing and performing at a very young age. I also got into plays and musicals throughout my childhood.
I always had a love for animals, and at the age of ten, became a vegetarian. My sister use to chase me around the house putting raw meet in my face while I was practically in tears. Aww…siblings!
I brought home all kinds of animals. Fish, lizards, hamsters, turtles, frogs, hurt birds. I loved them all and still do.
