Pamela, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Inspired by the beautiful stained glass in churches, my husband became a glazier right out of high school. He created many custom pieces and taught classes. The business eventually expanded to a full-service glass company. We specialize in foggy window repair, glass replacement and frameless shower door installations.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The biggest adjustment was going from a retail location to a service business. We service all of Chicagoland so it was challenging in the beginning. We had to figure out how to be in Elgin and Naperville one day and the North side of Chicago the next. It took a while, but we’re used to it now.
Please tell us about Classic Glass and Glazing.
We’ve found a niche market in the industry. We can replace broken or foggy glass in windows while keeping the existing frame. This saves customers a lot of money because they don’t have to replace the whole window. The other part of our business is custom work. We install frameless shower enclosures and create beautiful stained glass pieces for doors or windows. I like the fact that we help people when they need repairs, and also when they just want to upgrade their homes.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Starting a business on our own was stressful because we were responsible for every aspect of the company. It would have been easier to just go to work for someone else. I would have had a normal work day, weekends off, and a steady paycheck. In the beginning, I wondered why I didn’t just do that. But I’m so glad we took the risk. We get to work together as a family, and that’s the best part.
