Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Steve Best.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Best. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The practice was bequeathed to me by the Chairman of Neurology at Chicago Medical School – he had started the practice about 30 years earlier as an extension of his University-based practice. We provide care for people with Psychiatric, Neurological, Pain, and Developmental Disorders. Our niche is the evaluation & treatment of people with treatment-refractory illness (such as the 50% of people who do not recover from depression or concussion or pain or stroke). In that role we expect to find the co-morbidities that are “factors” in non-response to treatment, and then we devise strategies to address those factors and hopefully turn non-responders into responders who can recover from disabling afflictions. Over the years we have added “Departments” that provide on-site scanning, electrophysiology, neuropsychology testing, blood & body fluid testing, brain stimulation, infusion & injection services, and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.
Has it been a smooth road?
Inheriting a practice is a real blessing – it gave me an historical context for my launch into the real world of medical practice. Obstacles along the way have been local resistance to modernization of medical practice – we often hear “they do a lot of research over there” as a kind of back-handed compliment – suggesting that what we do is un-tested or unknown – when that is very untrue. The comments are impediments to our attempts to let people know that modern help is available locally.
Providing modern (advanced) help is difficult in a neighborhood setting.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Neuroscience Center – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are a multi-disciplinary Psychiatric practice. We have Neurologists, Neuropsychiatrists, Child Psychiatry, Nuclear Medicine, Psychology, Nutritional Biochemistry, and Pain Specialists on-hand to enable effective assessment and treatment. We publish in the fields of brain imaging, brain stimulation, and novel treatments (some of which were invented here and patented by us).
We strive to provide cutting edge care in a family-friendly environment.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Chicago is a wonderful place for adventure and for everyday living. It offers every imaginable resource and still has a “normal” feel to the community. I do wish that it was easier to travel on our roadways – that ease would keep all of our resources “available” without extensive planning.
