Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Williams.
Elizabeth, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I moved to Chicago 12 years ago from Denver, CO. I was touring possible apartment options with my husband (just a boyfriend then) and we went into this great, historic high-rise called the Fisher Building. It was built in 1892 by Daniel Burnham and was every dream of mine come true. I always wanted to live in a historically significant building and just had to sign a lease there. I did not have a job lined up for our impending move. I was 23 years old and thought I would just interview at a plethora of businesses. Naivety was my blissful ignorance. Fortunately, a regional director was covering the office there that day due to her entire on-site staff being sick with the flu. We hit it off and she casually mentioned that I would be good in real estate. I was with that company for 9 years. I traveled the US and Canada for them on acquisitions, RFPs, marketing pitches and more. I loved it but wanted to focus on Chicago and expanding my abilities into other real estate sectors other than multifamily. A friend from this company was being recruited by Reside Living (Newcastle’s apartment brand) and told me that they were looking for a director of marketing. I interviewed and accepted the opportunity. In the 2.5 years at the firm, I have expanded the marketing department to encompass an in-house social media director, an online content coordinator and an athletic director (plucked from Lululemon). We do 90% of our own graphic designs, too. Branding is at the heart of everything I do at Newcastle. We have developed a loyal brand following and have tapped into technologies that companies 10 times our size have not or outsource.
Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest struggle for me was that I had to learn how to do all of our company’s PR. I always worked with PR professionals but never had to do it on my own.
