Meet David Kohut of Westgate Music School in Palos Heights

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Kohut.

David (Owner/Instructor) received his degree in music performance from Northern Illinois University in 2000. Since then, he has been a private music teacher for 20 years at various music schools in the Chicago area. In 2011, David completed a degree in Music Education from VanderCook College of Music. In 2012, David began a career as a music teacher in the public school system. He has taught orchestra, guitar, and band classes at Lincoln Park High School, Rolling Meadows High School, and LaGrange School district 105. In 2014, David left the school system to pursue opening his own music school. He envisioned a music school that uses the most up to date technology to help students of all ages to reach their maximum potential. During that time, Dave authored and published his own series of guitar method books titled “The Contemporary Method to Guitar.” After almost 2 years of planning, he opened Westgate Music School in September of 2015. Since then, Westgate Music School has experienced steady growth in its overall enrollment. Westgate Music School continues to find new and exciting ways to provide its students with the best music education experience possible.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey of opening Westgate Music School was not easy at all. It required almost 2 years of planning and research before the doors opened for the first time. It took many months to find the location we currently have. Once the location was found, a considerable amount of renovation was required to get the space functional. With the physical and financial help of friends and family members, Westgate Music School was able to open its doors in September of 2015 and we haven’t looked back since. We cannot thank the people who invested their time and money into Westgate Music School enough. Without them, we would not be where we are today.
