Today we’d like to introduce you to Gail Eisner.
Gail – please share your story wit us.
John Eisner and I opened Scratch ‘n Sniff in 2004. It is our second store. Pumpkin Moon is our first – opened in 1995. We were always looking for fun new items for Pumpkin Moon and had so many ideas that we needed another store to hold them! We had several ideas and really wanted to incorporate pets into it so we decided to combine all our favorite ideas into one fun store. Scratch ‘n Sniff was born to accommodate the family, home and pet. It is about 30% pet-related with food and all necessaries for cats and dogs. We have infant clothing, wonderful accessories for women and fun and funky items for guys and the home. It’s a whole lot of fun for all ages.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Like any retail we have had some ups and downs. There was some major construction on our street and it was very difficult to navigate. Luckily the toys, Webkinz, were popular then and people made the trek to get to us. We have been able to continue by always providing top-notch customer service and making it a fun place to be.
Scratch ‘n Sniff – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Scratch ‘n Sniff is a unique combination in one store. We pride ourselves on carrying the best quality dog/cat foods and treats. We have a lovely bakery selection for pets and offer one-on-one fittings for dogs for harnesses, coats, and boots. We will find items for people with unique pet issues, such as custom collars, beds, and foods.
We have become known for good quality items for a good value that get the job done. On the human side our women’s purse lines have become favorites for many people, such as Espe from Canada and Pixie Mood cork bags. We have a huge line of novelty socks and useful household items from Kikkerland.
We are proud of our great customers who have their dogs bring them in every day for a special free treat. We love to see them and they love to see us! It’s a neighborhood store and we treat everyone like a neighbor. Our unique gift mix certainly sets us apart from any other (pet) boutique. I have never seen another store anywhere that puts it all together like we do.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I’m always happy to hear from customers that they “love” our store(s). It means that I’m doing it right. That is success. Satisfied customers that keep coming back and who recommend us to their friends. That’s like a pat on the back. They support us and in turn we are able to give support to the many schools and organizations in our area. Being fully immersed in our community as residents, neighbors, friends and colleagues makes for a well-rounded business.
