Today we’d like to introduce you to Marty Sullivan.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We started Black Dog k9 Training in a small room at the Animal Welfare League in Chicago Ridge. Our goal was to help shelter dogs receive the training they needed to find and stay in new homes. Our business soon outgrew the room at the shelter and began training in various facilities in the southwest suburbs. We currently train at our own center in Alsip.
In addition to our training programs we also have conducted training with shelter dogs and adults with disabilities from Sertoma Center. Black Dog K9 now offers private in home training for every type of canine behavior problem as well as obedience and puppy training. We are celebrating our 18th year in business.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We have been very fortunate to have worked with many great dog owners, veterinarians, shelters and police departments throughout the Chicago area. Our challenge is to find ways to help more dogs and owners.
Black Dog K9 Training – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are proud to have worked for many years without using painful training methods. We specialize in helping owners understand their dogs and work through behavior problems in a patient, logical manner. I believe that it is essential to find the cause of behavior problems and find real answers to them rather than punishing dogs for what they don’t understand. We work with all problems from housebreaking to aggression.
We are able to work with dogs and people with special needs successfully.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To us, success is seeing dogs overcome adversity and become happy members of a family. Having our business grow based on reputation and word of mouth referrals and seeing the training community move toward positive, motivational training methods. In a perfect world no more homeless dogs.
