Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephany Colunga.
Stephany, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I find art in everyday things, from dressing to cooking, communicating, creating objects and music, and the language we choose to use. I love all forms and feel there is not enough time in the day or days in a year to experiment with them all!
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
The art form that gets most of my attention is metalsmithing (a.k.a. jewelry making). I am most inspired by ancient cultures. I love to go museums and ponder on old works from other eras; how they were made, what tools were used, and what inspiration they took from. With my work, I want to give back that feeling of wonder, awe, and mystery that I derive from these works. I strive to create pieces that people feel connected to as if from another time. My most recent collection, Modern Relics 2.0, directly to create the air of contemporary antiquities. I am very interested in antiquated techniques of metalwork and travel to learn them. My newest collection I am currently working on is based off 6 cameos I had made while learning to carve from a master in Torre Del Grecco this past Spring.
Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
My advice for artists is to find your own voice, your own interests, and passion. If you’re merely following trends, this will show. It’s best to hone in on your own skills and always be open to learning new things.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
Very exciting for me, I will be a part of a group of talented designers called COLLECT1V that will have our own pop-up shop the entire month of October. We will be having our opening on Friday, October 5th from 7-9pm at the shop located in the West Loop at 725 W. Randolph St. in Chicago. Towards the end of the month, in this location, I will launch my new Cameo Collection. People can follow us for events on Instagram @collect1v and can see all my current work and one of kind work on my Instagram @colungajewelry. They can also find my collections on my website www.houseofcolunga.com.
