Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Hesse.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My wife Rachel and I are both young professionals and would rely on cleaning services for occasional help. We realized that it was difficult to find a company that was reliable and that had availability so we thought that we could do it better ourselves. We opened our doors about two years ago and along the way have invested in technology to streamline our process and add convenience to our clients. We also treat our staff like family and are thorough in our vetting process. We want our staff members to stay with us long term and to have a vested interest in our success and we owe 100% of our growth over the past few years to them.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The first few years are hard and it is not easy to provide a premium service in high volume consistently. We have had our fair share of hiccups along the way but we try to communicate with our staff frequently to find out what is working and what isn’t, and when we let down our clients we do everything that we can to make it right with them. We try our best and it’s hard to get it right every time, but in my opinion it is even harder to be accountable when things don’t go perfectly, and that is something that we always commit to.
Please tell us about Rubber Duck Cleaning.
We provide various types of cleaning services. For traditional housekeeping, we have a premium level of service that is intended to provide a deep clean including dishes and laundry service if time permits, but we also provide a service to young professionals who do not need the white glove treatment and really just need help with the basics at a lower cost. In addition, we provide Airbnb service that helps our hosts prepare for and clean up after their guests. We also provide commercial cleaning services to small businesses and residential building common areas.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
My wife and I completely underestimated the level of time and energy it takes to start a small business but we would do it all over again in a second.
