Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackie Mendelsohn.
Jackie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve had a passion for organizing ever since I can remember. I absolutely loved to clean my room as a kid, and frequently presented my mom with a box of items from my room that I no longer needed or wanted. My friends and family were also always asking me to help them tidy up. Once I even had a teacher call my parents and tell them I wasn’t paying attention in class because I was preoccupied with organizing my pens and pencils. I can’t help it, organizing is in my DNA!
Even though I loved organizing, I had no idea at the time that I could make a career out of it. I developed an interest in psychology in high school, and decided to make it my major in college. After graduating with a bachelor’s in psychology, I was accepted into a clinical psychology doctoral program. My first year in grad school made me realize that I didn’t really want to be a doctor; so I completed the first year and withdrew from the program to re-assess what to do with my life.
I sought out the help of a career counselor who specializes in entrepreneurship, and after a few months of meeting with her I decided to start my organizing business. It’s been a year since I started my business, and it has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely not! Starting a business on my own has not been easy, and there have been a lot of bumps along the way. I know a ton about organizing, but almost nothing about running a business, so I have been figuring out the business part as I go. I also made the tough decision to change my business name after finding out about a potential trademark issue, which resulted in a lot of extra work for myself. In the end, though, I created a brand that I love so much more than the original name, so it all worked out.
Please tell us about Om Your Home.
Om Your Home is a comprehensive home organizing service dedicated to reducing the clutter and the stress in your life! I have a passion for order and attractive, functional organizing solutions. I really strive to design systems that fit each individual client, and add a personal touch to every project. My goal is to maximize the space in your home and provide you with simple solutions to complex problems. When your living space is in order, there is less chaos and stress, which lets you focus on the things that really matter in life.
My background in psychology has been invaluable while organizing, and I am very proud of that. It can be a very emotional and overwhelming process, so the skills and empathy I am able to have for my clients can really help the organizing process. I also take pride in being non-judgmental and confidential to ensure my clients comfort.
What sets Om Your Home apart from other companies is all of the ways I can help you maintain an organized lifestyle! In addition to complete home organizing— closets, bedrooms, play areas, kitchens, basements, garages, you name it!— I offer complementary services such as paper management, downsizing, home staging, packing and unpacking for a move, and maintenance plans.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over I wouldn’t change a thing! Even though it hasn’t been easy to start my own business, everything I have done so far has been a learning experience. I wouldn’t be the same business owner or the same person I am now without those experiences.
