Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Mixter.
Matt, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started working when I was 12. I lived in Georgia so rules were loose and I was cheap 😉 Since then I have worked every job you can possibly imagine that would get me ready for launching a unique retail market with an ambitious mission. From Baskin Robbins to Bed bath and beyond to roofing and painting. In regards to seafood, I went to work for a large seafood importer a few months out of college and did that for 9 years – traveling all over the world sourcing seafood for large buyers in the US market. I graduated with an international business from university of Iowa because I knew I wanted to travel and connect dots.
Three years ago, I started my own importing and distribution company with a Norwegian partner – Hofseth. Around the same time, I started Wixter Market out of passion and opportunity. I saw the massive amounts of unnecessary waste and costs associated with an inferior product – The problem is the market didn’t know any of that-hence the opportunity to educate and drive sales/consumption. We will start Wixter Distribution so restaurants and retailers can buy our exclusive products and open another market in 2017.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Too many to list but #1 is finding the right people. Business is all about people, without good people you don’t have a good business, for long.

Seafood. We offer a higher quality, consistent product at a consistently lower price and provide education on the seafood supply chain. Real education, not talking points.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nothing, every experience we needed to learn from – good or bad, we learned. There is no blueprint for what we did so every decision was critical.
