Today we’d like to introduce you to Carole McCulley.
Carole, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Art has always been an integral part of my life. I remember being drawn to the unexpected, but beautiful quality of photography ever since I was in high school, back in the darkroom days. This was an important reason why I wanted to become a professional photographer and teacher of photography. I have been a photography teacher for the last fourteen years, so, I, in essence, practice what I preach! I strive to inspire these young adults to lead creative lives. Before my daughters were born, I decided to go back to school and get my master’s degree in photography, and from there, decided to start my business. I have been documenting families for the last four years and I thrive on discovering who they are as individuals and sharing their extraordinary stories.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I specialize in newborn and family photography, focusing on a lifestyle approach. I want every family to feel special and when we meet; it’s really about them and their story. I want families to remember laughs and smiles during our time together, and I hope I can freeze that moment in time through my work. I work at showing their connections and the love they share. Connecting with kids first is really important to me, as I think once I get the kids on a more personal level, it makes the session go a lot smoother. The parents become more relaxed, and the work becomes more authentic. I take on the role of the director in their story, leading them to specific spots based on light, and hoping to capture authentic moments. I love warm, deep tones that contrast, but I do not conform to one specific style, but rather edit how I feel in that moment. Because of that, storytelling is really important to me.
Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
Printing photos has become a lost art form in today’s digital world. There is something to be said about having your own physical photograph or piece of artwork being placed around your home versus flipping through them on your phone, to then be forgotten about. Encouraging families to print their photos has always been important to me as an artist, for preservation purposes, along with serving as a way to display my artwork.
In the beginning, social media played a large part for artists in getting work out in the open, but recently, it has become more difficult due to the change in algorithms. Chicago has always been a place showcasing many different artists from many different cultures. Continuing to have monthly art walks and pop up galleries are a great starting point for supporting artists and helping them get their work out in the open so that they can thrive.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
