Life and Work with Dr. Tammy Hicks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Tammy Hicks.

Please kick things off for us with some background on the story.
I am the Chief Executive Officer of the Chicago “300” Black Women non-profit organization. I hold a Ph.D. in Social Work with a research focus on child welfare, youth exposure to violence and African American women’s issues. I have 17 years of experience in child welfare and currently working as a private practitioner and life coach in the areas of depression, anxiety, and addictions. I am the founding member of the Chicago “300” Black Women, an organization that empowers thousands of African American women from the Chicagoland and surrounding areas. Founding this network has been an incredible experience. I am deeply grateful for the platform that God has provided the African American women in our community.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being Regarded as a Black Encyclopedia has been a challenge for me. Unfortunately, there are not many black women with a Ph.D. in Social Work and when I’m invited to the table, believe it or not, I am expected to have the answer. News flash no one has the answer for an entire culture.

Secondly, society has created a dynamic where many women of color are made to feel that we have to prove ourselves worthy and even twice as good to get an opportunity.

Please tell us about Chicago “300” Black Women.
In my experience, society has created a theoretical framework cannot justifiably articulate, critique, heal or celebrate the complexities of black women’s perspectives without dropping the ball at some point.

I believe what sets our organization apart from others we genuinely provide African American equality from all walks of life regardless of power, educational status or geographic location we all deserve to be celebrated and honored for what we provide to our families and our communities.

Our organization specializes in Empowered Women empowering women to dream bigger, better and greater!

Who have you been inspired by?
Michelle Obama – What an amazing person to represent us, African-American Women. Michelle is beautiful, brilliant, intelligent, innovative and everything I esteem to be.

Oprah Winfrey – What Oprah Winfrey has done for women and little girls all over the world is completely mind-blowing! She changed the dynamic of national television! She broke barriers that gave Black girls hope that they too can aspire to do great things.
