Meet VaLarie Humphrey of VaL Speaks Life & True Eagle Beauty Foundation in Western Suburbs

Today we’d like to introduce you to VaLarie Humphrey.

VaLarie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I went to college with a “winning at losing” mindset. After my first semester in college, my GPA was 0.923 all because of my mindset. After the second semester, it rose a tad bit to 1.44. Needless to say, I flunked out of college. It took me a year to get my life back on track. I had to attend a junior college and petition to get back into the university that once asked me to attend there. I went back to that university and turned my life completely around. I graduated and became an educator. My first year in education, I was awarded the New Teacher of Year Award. 13 years later, I went back to college to get a Masters in Administration. I am currently an Assistant Principal at a middle school in Aurora, Illinois.

All because of my choices as a young girl I yearned to give back and help those behind me. Like Harriet Tubman, I went back to save those coming behind me. With that mindset, I started a foundation that does female mentoring for females in 2nd grade through age 25. We currently do programming in three states. We are currently in Illinois, Ohio, and Texas, soon to launch in Arizona.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My struggles were the people I chose to surround myself with. After changing my environment, my mindset changed. I had to create a new normal. I have had to do this more than once in my life. At age 51, I am currently creating another new normal these days. My new normal today is shifting to the lifestyle of conducting personal and professional development for educators.

Please tell us about VaL Speaks Life & True Eagle Beauty Foundation.
VaL Speaks Life is my business that links educators and families together for the empowerment of the students.

I provide Personal & Professional Development for Educators. What’s so awesome about my illustrative workshops is that I have been a student, teacher, parent, and administrator do I bring a unique view from a different lens.

The creation of True Eagle Beauty Foundation, Inc. has been the game-changer in the lives thousands of girls. We provide female empowerment programming under the guidelines of Social Emotional Learning Skills. The awesome dynamic thing about our programming is that we provide services at the elementary, middle school, high school, collegiate, and post-secondary education levels up to age 25.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have gone to college for Marketing & Branding and Professional Speaking.
