Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Paulson.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up with a love of photography instilled in me at a young age from my mom. I scrapbooked about my life well into my 30’s. For me, it was always about the people, the human connection caught on film. So, when I was in college at UIC, I decided to study the arts in photography. At the same time, I was going through a divorce, so my school projects started turning towards relationships and their complexity. This eventually led me to shoot portraits of all kinds, couples, family, and kids included. As I tuned into what really spoke to my soul, I was pulled more and more towards couples and their dynamic, so weddings was a very natural and intuitive choice for me.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The hardest part for me has been believing in myself. Not listening to the voices in my head that say I’m not good enough or that I don’t deserve to be successful. Feeling this way caused me to hold back and not go after many opportunities. So, my advice to young women, whether going into business or not, is to first nurture your mind and soul. That way you can really own who you are, and that confidence will help in whatever endeavor you choose to follow.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Chase the Wind Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
I photograph weddings and engagements, not only in Chicago but anywhere couples would like to send me! I truly love to travel so doing destination weddings is so much fun. Couple things that set me apart are the fact that I make sure the couple gets all their photos, I don’t make them pick a certain amount to have on their USB. Then, also, I am a very relaxed, easy going person, which really calms brides down on the day of the wedding and helps get those beautiful images everyone wants.
For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
I believe women naturally have so much empathy, and this can put us in a position to really change the world.
