Art & Life with Sadie Woods

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sadie Woods.

Sadie, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’m a Chicago native with a childhood seeped in performing and visual arts training. A daughter of musicians, I learned to sing before I learned how to talk. I grew up between Humboldt Park and Boys town, which has influenced my artistic practice of bringing marginalized communities to the center of my work.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
Interdisciplinary. Transdisciplinary. I am a deejay by trade. My practice is rooted in storytelling through sound, sculptural objects, performance, and ephemera. More recently, I’ve been focusing on social movements, resistance, and cultural preservation through music and carnivalesque celebrations. It is important for me to have reference to what has come before to reflect what is relevant to our times. This year, I created a radio broadcast called “It Was a Rebellion,” to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Chicago riots on the west side in response to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s assassination in 1968. It examines the politics of language in the media while excavating messages still relevant today. My practice zeros-in on thropes that can be excavated to take on socio-political proportions and become a call to arms to remember times of resistance.

Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
Trust your gut. Follow your heart. Stay curious. Play.
