Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandra Perlow.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I became interested in art when my mother took me to the Art Institute when I was eight years old. This began my interest in pattern, drawing and painting. I received my B.A,E and M.F.A from the Art Institute. My mother wanted me to take art education so I could make a living. I taught fundamentals of two dimensional design and other courses at Columbia College and the Art Institute in Chicago.
I spent a lot of time walking the streets and watching people interact with one another and became interested in architecture and mosaics on walls and floors. Once I started to pay attention, I noticed how these forms interacted with one another.
My studio is located in the Loop in Chicago. I love the location because everything is old and new sloppy and clean. You can see new buildings next to old ones. Other interests include opera and literature, which often influence the titles of my artworks.
Please tell us about your art.
I am interested in layers of history, particularly of the city of Chicago. You can say the shapes and patterns of architecture are meaningful to me. This translates well into my love of collage technique. Collage is all about layers and communication, much like a city.
I work with a variety of materials: a variety of papers, inks, colored pencils, acrylic .and fluorescent paints.
I hope I can communicate with the pieces I create, but the materials themselves should communicate and interact with one another as well. I try to be fearless and try everything. Collage seems like a natural progression for me. Every and anything can influence my work from the color of the lake on a given day to an overheard conversation.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
Try to connect with friends by calling them, going to art openings, looking and discussing their work. When I need to, I step out into the world and go to The Art Institute, The MCA, or a gallery with a friend. This can help me find inspiration too.
Being an artist is a lonely job but like anything else, sometimes that is what it takes to get anywhere in life.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I am currently having an exhibition at the South Bend Museum of Art in South Bend Indiana. The exhibition goes until September 16th 2018. In addition, there is an event from 5-9pm on September 7 at the museum. I am giving a gallery talk at 6:15pm. People can support my work by visiting the museum, by showing work in more museums and galleries, and they can also purchase the work.
