Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Pulley.
Jasmine, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I could go back and say I picked up a film camera when I was 18 and learned the darkroom in high school, which is true, but my journey with photography did not really begin until I had my first DSLR as a junior in college. I went to study abroad in India, and wanted a really nice camera to document my travel. I fell in love with it. I think during my time there, I was training my photographic eye and learning to view the world around me through a lens.
I came back to school and was asked to take a couple of friends’ engagement photos. This just seemed fun to me, and never in a million years would I have guessed I would still be doing that almost ten years later, as a JOB.
Along the way, I ventured into food and interior photography, which I just love. I think at the heart of it all, I love to tell a good story with my camera, whether that is the story of a couple, a family, a dish, or a home.
Has it been a smooth road?
Early on, I think I got bit with the comparison bug and wanted to be successful really fast. It took me some time to just feel content with where I was and the work I was making. There were so many things I felt like I needed to learn and also master at once, and then so many things I just felt like my business needed to be legitimate. Oh, and I also did not want to go into insane debt starting a business, so I tried to teach myself most of it, like building a website, having a contract, invoicing, oh and you know, how to use my camera really well. 🙂
These days, I would say that being a parent and business owner is what I am trying to figure out the most. I have two boys 2.5 and 8 months old and I am tired like all. of. the. time. I am also just trying to figure out what is the right quantity and type of photography to do with the time I have to give. I want to do work that is life giving but also practical for my lifestyle and that can feel like a hard thing to have to decide between at times.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Jasmine Nicole Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I would say I am a storyteller at heart. I am obsessed with peoples’ stories. I ask way too many questions that my husband says I should not ask people I just met! But I want to know stories. I think photography just kind of clicked really naturally for me because it gave me an outlet to tell these stories in a creative way.
