Meet Angela Bolos-Hartman, Anna Armes and Amber Murphy-Huels of Twisted Scissors Chicago in Logan Square, Little Sister Avondale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Bolos-Hartman, Anna Armes and Amber Murphy-Huels.

Can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Anna, Angela, and Amber met working at a tiny Chicago punk rock salon. They all really appreciated each other’s work ethic. They cared so much about their craft and the business that they decided to start their own.

In 2007, they opened Twisted Scissors with no money, no business plan, they learned on the fly and their talent and passion for hair kept them afloat. They found an empty storefront on Point and Armitage and were determined to turn it into a successful, booming salon despite many, at that time, still saying “nobody goes west of Western Ave.”

They opened the salon on a budget of $30,000 dollars with a waiting room made up on lawn chairs, and a cooler full of ice and PBR. The books were pencil and paper, the staff was small, but people loved the services, the vibe and kept coming back!

They eventually extended into the adjoining storefront and then on the day of their ten year anniversary, opened Little Sister Avondale!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We’ve been super fortunate to have a really great team. We’ve had amazing clients and fellow business owners in the neighborhood. The biggest struggles were finally setting roots. As the rents continue to rise in Logan, we wanted to secure our future as a business, so we bought our building in Avondale which provides us with a ton of room to grow.

Twisted Scissors Chicago – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We do all kinds of hair! While we’re known for super vibrant, edgy punk hair, we have clients from all walks of life. We pride ourselves on being a safe space for any/all races and genders. We’re partnered with #StrandsforTrans, a service that provides a directory for Trans-inclusive businesses around the country.

We’re also very proud to be partnered with Green Circle Salons. As an eco-friendly salon, we compost all of our food scraps and divert about 1,600 lbs of color and solid materials from landfills every year. It’s something that we feel is really important to see changing in the industry currently.

We are definitely known for our color! People travel from all over Illinois for our Twisted Tints.

Our punk rock/vintage chic vibe at both shops definitely sets us apart from most traditional salon environments.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
It’s been a huge honor to see Twisted Scissors Logan Square celebrate it’s 11 year anniversary and also Little Sister celebrate 1 year already! It’s been amazing seeing our clients continue to go to both locations and support us through all of our changes and growing pains.

We were recently just awarded ‘Best Salon in Logan Square” by Logan Squarist for the second time with is a huge honor.
