Meet Syed Rahman of Modern Wall Art in Skokie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Syed Rahman.

Syed, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started with an interest in home decor and make it more customized to my needs as Muslim and someone who appreciates calligraphy. I began with making pieces that I wanted for myself and my home right in my mother’s house and then from there, I moved to make pieces for my friends and others who were interested. The support I received right at the beginning of my endeavors was what pushed me to make something out of my interest and turn it into a business. My interest started right around the end of 2013/beginning of 2014 and from there, I now have a gallery that showcases my favorite pieces as well as an online shop where people all around the world can customize their pieces and shop from us. Without my customers and my first supporters, I would not have had the drive to make something out of my love for home decor and wall hangings and for that, I am forever grateful.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
All things that are worth it never come easy and this business was no exception. Between finding people that can help make my vision come to life as well as building a name for myself was difficult but I have made great friends and connections that will stick with me forever. My demographic is a very small one compared to mainstream consumers because it is Islamic art, so it was difficult finding my footing and finding my place. There were many trial and errors and even now, the days are long and overwhelming but when my customers send me pictures of their art on their walls and knowing I was part of making their homes feel more special for them is so amazing to me.

We’d love to hear more about your company.
My company, Modern Wall Art, specializes in calligraphy pieces of our favorite verses from the Quran, the Holy Book, and our favorite prayers. We have found the perfect balance between modern art and Islamic art and have not looked back since. We have different products that range from wall hangings to customized pillar pieces and even table decor. The ideas I have for my pieces are inspired by my favorite art pieces and trying to find a way to implement Islamic art in it. Our customers love our wall hangings because they can be grand or the perfect fit for a small wall space depending on what they would like showcased in their homes. I am most proud of my customer’s support and how they have not let me stop doing what I love most, which is designing and cultivating Islamic art. I take pride in taking care of my customer’s needs and walking them through every step of the way and making sure they are 100% content with their pieces. I do not just sell my art, I offer my time, support and advice freely to anyone who is possibly interested in my pieces. Making a sell is not the most important part of the job to me, but rather making sure that whoever is talking to me about what they want in their house is completely happy with what they are receiving and if not, we try to find a solution to their problem rather than sell something I am not proud of. It is always quality over quantity here and if something doesn’t look well enough to hang in my own home, I don’t even offer it to the public. Being genuine is hard to find with business owners so I believe that is what sets me apart from all other businesses.

What were you like growing up?
I was the outgoing kid who expressed myself through my fashion. I was a picky eater and always knew what I wanted. I was never considered someone who was indecisive. I loved dressing up and always looking presentable, and I brought that with me when I got a little older and my interest in home decor began. I love finding the humor in things and I’m always grateful for the opportunities I had, even if it was difficult, I persevered and worked hard for what I wanted.
