Meet Shauna Demara of Golden Door Wellness in Glen Ellyn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shauna Demara.

Shauna, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have been lucky enough to have been practicing Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture for the last 8 years. When I graduated I worked for a practice in the city for a few years.

It was during this time that I realized what a void there was of acupuncture being provided in the suburbs. We would have patients driving into the city to get acupuncture because they couldn’t find anyone near them. Four years ago, I decided to take a leap and open up my own practice in my home town of Glen Ellyn and in the River North area of Chicago. After splitting my time between both I realized how much I loved practicing just in the burbs and so a year ago I decided to solely focus on Glen Ellyn and couldn’t be happier.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
At first, I thought I wanted to have multiple practices. One in the city, where I started and one in the suburbs where I saw such a need. I realized how hard it is to give both your love and attention when you are starting both and decided to go where the need was and focus on the suburbs only. I have been so fortunate that since there is such little competition that for those first couple of years I grew without having to do much networking and advertising, but with just word of mouth. Now that Glen Ellyn is my base, Golden Door Wellness is finally expanding into a holistic practice with acupuncture, nutrition, massage, reiki and herbal supplements which was my goal for the past few years and finally now coming into fruition.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Golden Door Wellness, is an Chinese Medicine studio that provides acupuncture, cupping, nutritional therapy, herbal supplements, reiki and massage. We want to be a one stop shop for people seeking holistic health in the Western Suburbs. We make sure to specialize each and every treatment to cater to the individual patient by asking a ton of questions and then seeing what treatments would be best for each person and by making sure that we look at what the patient can be doing in their day to day life, such as diet and lifestyle, to help facilitate obtaining and maintaining the patients’ health.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up with parents who stressed a work life balance and to always find the calm and to use your imagination. So surprise, surprise that I went into holistic health. My love growing up was dance because I think if you find a form of movement, whatever that may be, that helps you to check out while getting moving, then it’s not exercise its stress relief.
