Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Peppeard.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Shannon. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My passion for design started at an early age. I never knew the talent I possessed at a young age was limited to only some and not everyone possessed it. My natural ability with color and scale are just innate and was never taught. I didn’t realize this talent however till I was much older and never knew it would serve me in a career. I did attend Harrington Design School and it was at that time that I decided I wanted to be an interior designer. Sidetracked though after college I never worked for a design firm and instead went into the finance world and worked at a mutual fund company instead. It wasn’t until I married and had my first two of three children that I decided while being a stay at home mom I would supplement income by charging for my design services to friends and neighbors. How I designed my own home really started the future of my own design business. What I thought was going to be a part time job to help facilitate extra income and my love of design turned into full time job from the start. I found myself overwhelmed with client work and having clients on waiting lists from the beginning. I have owned my business for 13 years. I pride myself and my company by never having to market or advertise my design services and it solely be based on word of mouth and client referrals. My first paid job came to me by a referral of my aunt. It was a childhood friend of hers that needed some design work done. I have to say I jumped into this first project head first. Not having any experience or knowledge of construction I took on the project. It was a downtown Chicago high rise in Harbor Point. What I thought was a little decorating help turned into gutting two condos and converting them into one residence. I lived by the motto “fake it till you make it” and in this instance I truly did just that and quickly started to interview and pull together tradesman and contractors to get started on the project. The project was a complete success and to this day the best clients I have ever worked with in the 13 years of doing design. Since that initial project I went onto designing their newly purchased lake house on Lake Delevan in WI. Also, had the pleasure of designing two of their children’s homes in the city. My love for design and passion for creating beautiful spaces for all my clients has been my biggest reward. It never gets old to finally implement my design into a space and get to reveal the finished room. The best part of all my projects is getting to see my clients’ faces during the process of the reveal. What started as a small side business turned into a dream come true and being able to love what I do is the best part of it all.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have to say other than a few clients not being the best match to work with it really has been a smooth ride. I can go on about those few clients though! Lol
Peppeard Interiors – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Peppeard Interiors is a full service design firm that specializes in turn key design. Which means I take on projects from start to finish which includes space planning, construction and design work. I think that is what sets me apart from other designers. I am good at prioritizing projects and getting work done from start to finish. I would say that what I am known for and what seems to be the same compliment given to me after every project is that I create spaces that feel very comfortable. Clients are always telling me that the spaces I design feel collected over time and that I Have captured the look that wanted without really knowing what they wanted. Most proud as a company is my ability to retain new and old clients through are reputation of good design.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is the ability to be successful at something that you love to do every day.
