Meet Mona Alexander of Purrfecshun Designs in West Loop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mona Alexander.

Mona, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
PURRFECSHUN was (unofficially) started in 2008, the following year after I graduated with my degree from The Illinois Institute of Art – Chicago, and quit my job at a stationary company. Ever since I graduated, I’ve worked completely independent; a “freelancer” of sorts. However, early last year when I was offered the opportunity to create a rental website, and a social media site, I was a bit overwhelmed. It was possible for me to complete it, but NOT possible with just ME, so sadly it had to be turned down; but I feel it was a missed opportunity to get the PURREFCSHUN name out there and to change my financial situation.

The beginning of PURRFECSHUN Designs stemmed from a day of frustration. It stemmed from my A.D.H.D. driven need to make sure everything is as perfect as it can be.

Basically, I channeled Kanye West; minus the “give a black man a chance” temper tantrum.

I brought out MY “I don’t give a f***” attitude and accepted that everyone isn’t going to like/want/hire me. BUT….the ones who DO, are the ones I WANT. It’s a mutual desire.

I then brought out my funny side…stopped caring about “social standards,” celebrated my BIG HAIR (which I REALLY do have lol), executed the known fact that humor sells and tossed it up.

ALMOST OVERNIGHT…I had people blowing up my inbox. When I would apply for certain gigs with my “magic” pre-written email, I would 90% of the time get a response, AND 80% of the time I would be hired.

I found my calling! 🙂

Then over the years, I tweaked my branding style, which again, was forgetting everything I was taught about interviewing; EVERY client gets 100% Mona. I stopped preparing scripts for calling clients, and just spoke to them as if they were my best friends. It’s been working for me.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In January of 2014, my Grandma was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, and I was then her Power of Attorney. As of the beginning of 2017, I was appointed her Guardian. So I needed to step in to take care of her…in every sense of the word. When you have a business that STOPS COMPLETELY when you cannot be in the office, working on the laptop or even be around.

Over the last year and a half, I’ve run into a few kinks in my business; though the interest in my work (especially after every web site revamp) has NOT stopped and I get calls daily inquiring about things, I am not able to accept because I’m unsure about how much time I am going to have to get projects done.

I make a lot of jokes about overloads of Red Bull, but that stuff is real. Like, REALLY REAL. It seemed PURRFECSHUN grew so quickly that I just couldn’t keep up with the demand. Whether it was the level of work, “social status” of clients, or simply the amount of clients….it grew. I was almost sweating Red Bull in pure form.

Simply put, I LOVE WHAT I DO. I cannot see myself doing anything else, so I’ve expanded and built out my team of dependable PURRFECSHUNists to help carry the load.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the PURRFECSHUN Designs story. Tell us more about the business.
PURRFECSHUN Designs deals mainly in Web Design, Graphic Design and Corporate Branding strategies that are very trendy, market friendly and most importantly, professionally tailored to your specific industry. We also create unique, sometimes crazy e-commerce solutions, logos, business cards, party and event invitations, t-shirt designs, etc. Whew. Frankly, your project is safe with us…more so “coddled.” PURRFECSHUN is also known for standing out, obviously. There’s NOTHING at all like us right now.

Clients appreciate the fact that I am small but pack a big punch, kind of like a small and firm butt. Humor is also an appreciated anecdote in a sometimes stuffy industry, but still very professional throughout.

With a new project, I prefer to start COMPLETELY outside of “the box” and work our way back in, all while following those strict rules of Graphic Design and color theory. Lastly, because I am a freelancer in my blood, I am willing to come to clients at their offices to get a better feel as to their businesses and ideas. In turn, I am able to work with just about any budget. Anyone who knows quality and sees their own business as quality will be able to get something amazing out of working with PURRFECSHUN Designs.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I haven’t had too much of a “lucky break” yet as of now. I’ve always just made a decision that I was going to try something, and see what happens. I’m basically a “leaper”, and hopefully I find my wings before I hit the ground.
