Meet Luisa Castellanos of Science Retail in Downtown Chicago/Chicago Suburbs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luisa Castellanos.

Luisa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Science Retail was born in 2014 by the mind of Andy Freivogel. At that time, the two of us joined forces – myself coming from a creative background and Andy a strong background in IT. The goal was to create a technology consulting company that could support the many unique independent retailers in the Chicago area, and eventually the LA area as well.

Before my time at Science (and during) I was deep in the non-profit art world. I also worked as an artist and an entrepreneur for most of my life. I studied Entrepreneurship and Marketing at DePaul University, Chicago and now continue to support entrepreneurs doing great things in the food/beverage/retail industry.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As with any “startup” or small business, we aren’t much different. With that in mind, we understand the struggles that many of our customers are going through running their own businesses. There aren’t many days off when you run your own business, but we’re okay with it. We are working with some really cool people running interesting businesses that we want to support.

Although we are a lean team we have made it work and continue to learn more about our abilities every day.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Science Retail – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Science is a technology consulting company that focuses on bringing independent businesses into a modern age. These technologies include point-of-sale, wifi, websites and everything in between. Our customers are doing some really neat things in the Chicago and LA areas and we are there to make sure everything is plugged in and running smoothly. Sometimes that means dealing with Comcast on their behalf, reconfiguring printers or planning out their next moves for a new location. But our relationship with our customers doesn’t stop there, what sets us apart is that we really do care about these businesses. These are the coffee shops, pizza parlors and cocktail bars that we truly enjoy visiting and want to support. We’re not just your regular “IT Guys”.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We’re always looking to team up with new businesses whether it is a type of business we have worked with before or something completely different. That’s what keeps our jobs interesting. We deal with new problems every day, some more challenging than others. As one of the partners, I recently quit my day job to focus on all the exciting new Science projects which are a big move for us.
