Today we’d like to introduce you to Lourdes Cornelius.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In 2013, after 20 years in corporate America, my position along with over 100 other positions were eliminated.
While I looked for a new job, a very close friend who had her own business inspired me to step out of my comfort box and try something completely different. She had a successful salon in Arlington Heights that specialized in wigs. The bulk of her clientele you can imagine where cancer patients.
As I began thinking of what other service cancer patients might need, I thought of my sister who had to see an Electrologist to remove unwanted facial hair, the result of chemo/radiation/medication etc. I, like my sister, had electrolysis done years ago. It had been 20 plus years since I had tweezed my eyebrows thanks to electrolysis. I decided to pursue an academic training program that took into account my experience and existing education so that I could work in my friend’s salon.
Once I received my state license I immediately opened up in Hair For You salon in Arlington Heights, Luck would have it that through my contacts I was introduced to a plastic surgeon in Wilmette. A couple of months later I opened up my second location the Elysa Fisher Women’s Life Center.
How would I handle two locations, my Electrologist instructor referred a student to me. She began working with me out of the Arlington Heights office. As time went on the Wilmette location required my full-time attention.
Today there are two of us working in the Wilmette office. Nataliya Tckochova and I work Monday – Saturday, with evening hours on Tuesday and Thursday’s.
Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest struggle was coming to a realization that what I had enjoyed for so many years, was not satisfying my need or desire to get up in the morning and go to work. I was burnt out from negotiating contracts, working on line reviews. It was time to rejuvenate my career and get excited about getting up in the morning. Having a heart to heart conversation (and a big glass of wine) with my friend Linda DiFronzo, owner of Hair For You Salon, helped me realize that I was well prepared to branch out on my own.
After all, I had 20 years of experience in the fortune 500. I had learned how to launch and market new businesses domestically and internationally. Armed with the hands-on experience as well as the academic (MBA) I knew I could take the leap. Especially since I had the support of my former colleagues and family.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Electrolysis for You specializes in removing unwanted hair permanently. While there are many different methods of removing hair, Electrolysis is the only one recognized by the FDA as permanent. It works on any color skin and any color hair; including gray and white hair.
And unlike other methods electrolysis is safe on eyebrows. Imagine never having to tweeze your eyebrows again?? I am most proud of our sincere desire to help those with unwanted hair. There are many women we see who have tried other methods and find us at the point when they are frustrated. The frustration is sometimes caused by an underlying hormonal issue that was never questioned.
During the prospective clients free 45-minute consultation we go over a presentation explaining causes of unwanted hair and how electrolysis works. We also do a free sampling so the client understands first hand what it will feel like. We really try to reinforce that Electrolysis, while it is permanent, it is a process. Similar to braces, it won’t happen overnight, it takes time.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Our city is a great place for more Electrologists. There is a very large demand for permanent hair removal. Not just in Chicago but all over the US. While Electrolysis was invented in 1875, it’s amazing how so few people know about it.
And there is nothing out there that can remove blond or gray hair, There is a lot of laser hair removal available in Chicago. And while I believe laser has its place, there is nothing better than electrolysis to permanently remove those hairs that got left behind during the laser process.
