Today we’d like to introduce you to Leslie Shores.
Leslie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m originally from outside of Nashville, Tn. and have lived in Chicago for sixteen years! After studying fashion and landing a receptionist position in a salon I found myself in love with the hair industry. I then attended Steven Papageorge Hair Academy and went through a three apprenticeship at an upscale salon in Gold Coast. I then classically trained in the ABC two week Color Theory at the Vidal Sassoon Academy in Santa Monica, Ca. Throughout my career my extended education training has been over all over the world, including studying at the L’Oréal Academy in Rome, Italy. This began my love of travel in my spare time as well. Chicago but also New York & Los Angeles, including:
Balayage Training at L’Oréal Academy in New York with Nancy Braun
Numerous Balayage classes through the L’Oréal Academy in L.A. and Chicago with Nancy Braun and Kaz
Sunlights Balayage Training with Candy Shaw
MANE ADDICTS/Jen Atkin Color education with Tracey Cunningham in Beverly Hills
BTC Color Theory with Celebrity Colorist Justin Anderson of Chris McMillian.
I then moved on and started working at Renee Feldman Salon two years ago. I absolutely love what I do and my goal is to bring style, creativity, and art to every client through my craft. I have now been in what I feel is one of the most amazing industries for almost sixteen years!
When you love something everything else just falls into place. I think the key to being successful is being passionate about what you do, staying humble, being honest, really listening to people, and not sweating the small stuff. I know it sounds cheesy but just try to smile and make people feel good. That’s why I love this industry, I get paid to make people feel good about themselves while also being social & creative. Could it get any better?
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I feel grateful to be able to say that I truly love what I do. I feel lucky to have become successful at it. That being said, it took a lot of hard work and determination to get here. Sometimes I think people discredit our industry because it’s fun & glamorous! There is a lot more to it, we are having fun but also dealing with vanity and standing on our feet for long hours at a time.
All the hard work is worth it and teaches you a lot about yourself. Nothing was ever just handed to me but that made me who I am and built my character. I think everything truly leads you to where you’re supposed to be and success doesn’t come without hard work & discipline. When you are passionate about your career everything eventually does just fall into place.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Renee Feldman Salon – what should we know?
I am a Color Specialist at Renee Feldman Salon. I am known for Balayage-a French highlighting technique. I’ve been doing Balayage for almost twelve years. I’m also known for helping clients get their hair healthy and keeping it healthy. I always tell them the integrity of their hair is more important to me than the color. If your hair isn’t healthy, no one is looking at the color of it. The healthier the hair, the better my color will look.
I love our team at Renee Feldman Salon. It’s a small, hip, but upscale salon with cool vibes. It all comes from the top. We are all stylish, talented, and passionate about what we do. I couldn’t be as good as I am without them. I’m not a one woman show. Team work makes our dream work.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I am a perfectionist and OCD. It’s my biggest asset. But not everything will always be perfect. You’re gonna make mistakes. That’s the only way you learn.
I’ve always been an extremely hard worker and am disciplined and on time.
Staying humble and never being too good to learn from people. You never stop learning and you never know everything. You can always learn something, whether from your fellow coworkers or life advice from a client. It’s important to truly listen to people because you never know what they are going to teach you.
