Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Hall.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
It’s hard to believe sometimes that I’m a 15-year veteran of the photography industry. My passion for capturing life in photographs goes back much further than that. I’ve always had a camera within arm’s reach. I remember as early as 5 years old wanting to be a photographer, so it’s no surprise that photography has always had a presence in my life. I started my work literally in the darkroom. I spent most nights and weekends developing film and printing images by hand and I loved every second of it. I started being drawn to portraiture and lifestyle photography early on, which naturally led me to wedding and event photography. The really substantial life events captured my curiosity and I loved documenting them for people. My job history before I opened my own studio is in image processing, darkroom and film management, product photography and studio management. I started my studio formally 8 years ago as a family portrait and wedding photographer and today I host sessions for families in all stages of life, including newborns. I still take numerous weddings each year and have found a wonderful niche in birth photography. I love being adaptable. I never get bored.
Please tell us about your art.
With my broad knowledge base and expertise I’m a very versatile photographer with a wide range of subjects. It’s not uncommon for me to shoot a wedding on a Saturday, family portraits on Sunday and be in studio with a newborn later the same week. Lifestyle peaks my curiosity and inspires my art the most. I love getting to know new people and understanding what they like to celebrate about themselves and their families. Some of my most dramatic work is done in birth photography. It’s a very beautiful niche of the industry that I don’t think a lot of photographers have the on-call scheduling flexibility for. I love that it gives a voice to a very vulnerable rite of passage for many women and their families. Every time I give a family the gift of replaying this intense transformation I am pleased with my role and ability to be that artist. It’s exhausting and exhilarating work all at the same time.
Through all of it, whether at an event or in the studio, it’s important for me to find authenticity with my clients. The places deep inside that makes them unique and then figure out how to capture it. To help people trust me enough to be that vulnerable is very important to the success of my work, especially with the little kids. To gain a child’s trust is a huge high for me. To let them have the time and space to be themselves is something special and something that the parents appreciate when they see the gallery later on.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
These days, particularly in the photography industry we’re dealing with an oversaturated market of consumers who all have cameras. Point and shoot, cell phone, DSLRs. You name it, the technology is very accessible. I think consumers are finding it difficult to value a professional’s vision and talent when they can take an image with their cell phone so quickly. I think many of us are constantly searching our creativity for a way to stand out and a voice to help potential clients see their value as an artist.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
The best place to find me is on my website, Facebook or Instagram. I’m always updating my website and social media with new work.
The best way to support my work is by booking a session or giving a personal referral. All of my sessions are custom collaborations with each client which makes each session unique and memorable for them.
