Today we’d like to introduce you to Kasia Kay.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kasia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started as an art gallery in 2006, and were located in the West Loop / Fulton Market for 10 years. In addition to a very intense gallery exhibition program, KKAP anticipated in many international art fairs in NY, Miami and Chicago. Currently I’m a private dealer and curator, and produce pop-up shows for selected artists that I still represent, usually in collaborations with other related to art and design businesses.
Has it been a smooth road?
Ah, of course year 2008! Otherwise KKAP was a successful gallery during 10 years of its business. My program as Projects is less demanding but still successful.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Kasia Kay Art Projects – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I’ve always been a solo owner, artistic director and curator of Kasia Kay Art Projects. I started as a pop-up gallery, when no galleries were doing it yet (perhaps very few did). Now I’m producing popup shows again… And, I also used to create with my artists site-specific street installations, while it also was a rarity for galleries programs, at least not as much as nowadays. One year we were in an official Art Basel Miami Beach special events art program.
I’ve been promoting younger, less or mid-career artist. I worked with several artists who became very established but left me because more established galleries who took them on, demanded exclusivity from those artists. It’s that ugly part of the art business… But at least I could give myself a credit for having a good eye…
I loved, and still do, researching and finding new exciting artists, their intelligent, innovative and unique works of art. I did promote, and still do, new media arts, which 12 years ago was still a fairly new ‘department’ for fine arts. Three years ago I invited some of those artists to my new venture (part of KKAP), a boutique line called Fine Art Wallpapers, which features wall coverings designed by them, as well as by so far one but an amazing fashion designer. I’ve always been brave about going against the grain…
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I like that it has become, much more than it used to be, a cultural city. One can find a lot of good art here, attend various art events, performances and so on. We have great museums and the city is beautiful. Still, it lacks somewhat that cosmopolitan nature of New York. And, I say no to guns!
