Today we’d like to introduce you to Joyce Dawkins.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Joyce. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
She ROCKS It Celebrating Women Who Rock was birthed out of my desire to honor and empower women everywhere. I always had a passion for serving a passion for changing someone else’s life through service and a passion for having events.
The vision for she rocks it came at a point in my life where I had become unemployed and rather than sit in sorrow I decided to do something with my time so I re-entered college knowing that my education would be instrumental and a key to my success in whatever I decided to do. So I began to think how can I change the life of other women. As I thought about it I begin to think of my situation being unemployed and I literally asked God how can I make a difference in someone’s life while being unemployed and not having a steady income God told me that I didn’t have to have in order to give and what that basically meant to me was that he had already equipped me and giving me everything I needed to make a difference in someone else’s life he had given me the gift of speaking so I could go out and speak to women, he had given me the gift of cooking so I could go into my pantry and prepare a meal for others, and he had given me time because at that point in my life I was unemployed so I had time to go into shelters and
render my time.
During this period I began to think I needed more I needed to be able to do more I told God I wanted to host events, I wanted to celebrate women, the everyday women who worked nine to five in Corporate America and then worked 5 to 9 in her passion, the woman who was perfecting work-life balance, the woman who had overcome obstacles and now mentors other women by letting them know they too can overcome, the woman who worked full-time and also went to school full-time, the entrepreneur, the community activist, and the nonprofit organization founder, these were the women I wanted to showcase.
As I begin to write the vision I began to make it clear and clear so that when I ask God how can I do this he could give me the desire of my heart during that time he gave me she rocks it. She rocks it had been a vision of mine for years it wasn’t until May of 2017 that I launched my first event and hosted over 215 women honoring 22 women. I knew that God had given me this organization because my only platform for marketing was social media and word-of-mouth through both of those Outlets my first event sold out to the venue capacity. I had my second Event in May of 2018 which also sold out. I don’t boast or brag on the fact that my events sold out they are just a testament to me of my purpose and God’s promise to me.
I recently launched another event under She ROCKS It, called the Girlfriend Gathering. This is a ladies night with a Twist of empowerment this event brings together women in a casual setting where networking shopping food laughter and fun play an intrical part of the evening. The highlight of this event is the gathering around of women we come together and talk about topics and issues affecting the everyday woman and women are free to share in a safe environment their perspective and their point of view as well as their experiences on different life situations.
I launched my first event on faith and 60 followers on social media I continue to operate in faith believing that God will increase my attendance increase my platform increase my presence and enlarge my territory so that women across the Chicagoland area and surrounding cities know who she is.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road to get to where I am today however if it had been smooth I probably would be worried because success isn’t a smooth process.
The biggest struggle I faced was trying to get others to see the vision, believe in the Vision and trust my vision.
It didn’t take long for me to realize that my vision was just that my vision therefore others couldn’t see what God had given me. That meant that I had to operate in faith, walk in my purpose, show my passion through my events and build this organization that God has blessed me with.

I am most proud of how my organization has been accepted and how it has established a reputation for having great inspiring and empowering events.
There are so many organizations with similar missions and goals that are doing AMAZING things. We all have women at the center of our purpose.
What I feel sets me apart is the overall experience I Look to give women when they come to my event; from registration to the volunteer team to the atmosphere to the decor to the location and Ambience that is given from the venues that I select. I put a lot of thought and preparation into the environment I place my guest in. I’m a firm believer the first impression is a lasting impression.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The characteristics I feel is most important to my success is: honesty, trustworthiness, sincerity, transparent and knowledge.
It is said that honesty is the best policy and when you have an organization where you are attracting people to come and pay and participate you want to be honesty about what you are doing and why. I State often that a portion of the proceeds from my events go to help women in need those who are in homeless shelters or living in low-income areas I highlight often pictures showing where we have gone to shelters and prepared meals and giving out toiletries I believe being honest will allow others to support you.
