Today we’d like to introduce you to John-Michael Korpal.
Thanks for sharing your story with us John-Michael. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Flying Dolphin Studio was established in 2010 as a personal live workspace that allowed me the time and space to create my art.
Over the years, the studio has evolved into a multi-purpose space allowing me a wonderful opportunity to expand my studio practice out into the community. Through the offering of a wide variety of classes and workshops that encourage students with diverse interests and backgrounds to explore their creativity.
My intent is to empower individuals to explore new pathways to tap into their creative side, learning a new skill or just explore and have some creative fun.
Flying Dolphin Studio partnered with Dabble in 2014, allowing me to expand the scope of individuals attending classes at the studio.
As one of the co-founding members of the Rogers Park Arts Alliance (RPAA), the studio practice extends into the community facilitating in the development of fully executed art events in collaboration with local galleries, visual artists, performance artists and independent theaters. This engagement creates an ongoing artistic dialogue forging new alliances between the businesses and residents of a neighborhood of diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
Has it been a smooth road?
As with anything in life it is a process and one of the best ways to learn something, is by expanding your comfort zone and trying new things. The most important thing is to stay true to your dream and passion; remember if your intent is based out of love, support and having fun, then you will be able to achieve your goals.
The energy of what you create will embody and convey those feelings and allows individuals to feel supported and empowered, to become the best they can be and in turn they will be able to inspire others.
One of the struggles is there is often not enough time in the day to achieve everything that I want to be able to finish, there is always a to do list of things awaiting me every morning.
But this makes everyday, a new adventure and there is always something new and exciting to do.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a full-time working visual artist.
I have open the doors of the studio to be able to offer classes and workshop that encourage students with diverse interests and backgrounds to explore their creativity. I am also a health professional and massage therapist so I incorporate elements of wellness and creativity in my practice. I want to be able to empower individuals to be the best that is possible and help them explore all the realms of possibilities!
The classes currently offered at the studio are Calligraphy, Origami, Beginners Printmaking, Intuitive Painting, Beginners Drawing and Haiku. So, there are always interesting things happening at the Studio inviting individuals to explore their creativity.
I also offer individual, one-on-one artistic coaching for individuals who are looking for assistance in reaching their next creative goal.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think the energy of Chicago is amazing and so powerful to the creative process.
Everywhere you turn, you are surrounded by inspiration and opportunities.
Chicago is also a great city for artists in general, there is a great diverse community that is very supportive of the creative process. There are many venues that are dedicated to creating supportive incubator spaces that provide valuable space and time for artists to developed and explore their creative ideas and concepts.
The one thing that would be helpful is that if there was a greater understanding of how the arts enrich our everyday experiences. In the city and beyond often the Arts are the first to lose their funding which makes it much more difficult for artists to be to provide for their basic living expenses and create the work they are inspired to do.
