Meet Joellyn Tulipano-Huebner of Sweet Soirées in River Forest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joellyn Tulipano-Huebner.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Joellyn. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
On an afternoon in 2008 while the mortgage crisis loomed and the days in my position as a Mortgage Account Executive at Citibank were numbered, I saw a sign in my neighborhood bakery window that changed everything for me the moment I read it. “Wedding Cake Decorator Wanted, Will Train.” I had just been looking into cake decorating classes as a way to fulfill a creative void. I got the job and it plunged me head first into my new adventure. Shortly afterward, I happened upon an online party blog that featured the most gorgeous dessert tables I had ever seen. I knew instantly that with my new skills as a cake and pastry artisan, dessert buffets were exactly what I wanted to do. I opened Sweet Soirees a month later.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As with any new business, there are always struggles along the way but I was pretty lucky. I was careful and started off small with very little overhead and grew in baby steps.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Sweet Soirées – what should we know?
We are a niche dessert catering company that specializes in custom styled and highly visual dessert buffets and sweets stations. We are known for our gorgeous displays that make a dramatic statement and are a huge hit with our clients and their guests. We pay meticulous attention to detail not only in the styling of our buffets but in our desserts as well. Every element is thought about in great detail in order to achieve our unique style.

From the type of desserts to the color of the buttercream to the table accents, backdrop and everything in between, every aspect serves a visual purpose. I’m proud that I have a design aesthetic that stands out and I’m so pleased when a client tells me that they have looked at other dessert companies and they hired me because of my unique style. It also makes me giddy when someone tells me they were at an event and when they saw the dessert buffet, they immediately knew it was a Sweet Soirees display. Mostly though I’m proud that I built this little company from an idea and here I am, thriving a decade later and I’m still loving every second of it. Everything about Sweet Soirees is still all me…I am at the helm from start to finish to ensure every detail is perfect.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
There’s definitely not just one answer for that. Perseverance and determination is a huge quality because there will always be obstacles in the way. The strength has to come from within… you can’t look to anyone else to provide that. Another essential quality is to learn everything about the business. Devour information and read as much as you can. Make a point to learn something new every single day.
