Meet Jereme Smith of DII Architecture in Prospect Heights

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jereme Smith.

Jereme obtained his master’s degree in architecture from the University of Illinois at Champaign, IL. During his tenure, he received two fellowships, & the opportunity to study architecture in Europe for a year.

Prior to founding Design Insight Inc. in 2002, Jereme worked for a variety of prominent firms. Most notably, Kenyon & Associates Architects, Techline Inc, & Osterhaus McCarthy Architects. He’s won many awards including the Chicago ‘Key to the Future’ housing competition, the New York HumanScale office design competition, & the Design Excellence Award; Arlington Heights.

He has been published in various publications like the Sun Times, Chicago Home magazine, & I4 Design. His work has been displayed at the W Hotel through the IDSA, at the Art Museum of Virginia for the C2C eco-home exhibit, & I-space Gallery in Chicago. Smith has his architectural license, as well as architect/engineer and design/builder insurance. DII is also a member of the Association of Licensed Architects(ALA).

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We’ve had an ebb & flow of project managers, builders, etc. in terms of expanding/contracting as needed for our project loads. We also have part time drafters & back-up general contracting companies to handle busy times. Overall, DII is focused on a steady increase in quantity of projects, but the priority is quality.

One main challenge was in 2009; the recession caught up to us & also coincided with our move to the NW suburbs. Our projects scaled back in frequency & size. This hit our contractors the hardest as I was able to keep design work & some fabrication going.

Since then, we’ve steadily increased our work load & projects north, northwest, & west of the city.

We are excited for the future growth of DII & striving for a better project each opportunity!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
