Meet Jacqueline Fair and Christian Harris of MaidPro Oak Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacqueline Fair and Christian Harris.

Christian has always stated he wanted to be an entrepreneur from the time he was in 5th grade. During high school, he not only took every business class available, he also participated in several Chicagoland outreaches designed to foster and encourage the entrepreneurial spirit in young adults. It was no surprise when Christian decided to major in Entrepreneurship in college and completed his Bachelor Degree at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois in May 2013.

In January 2013, I Jacqueline Fair, Christian’s mother realized that I had probably not saved enough for retirement. Although it was against the advice of all the big time financial advisors, I decided I wanted both of my sons to graduate college without loans and I decided that I needed to take a big risk to accumulate more retirement income. I decided to invest in a business and I asked my son Christian to run the business.

In August 2013 we opened our doors and although we have had challenges, we are still growing and will very soon be able to help me toward my retirement goals. We currently service over 150 clients a month and most are on a recurring monthly or biweekly basis.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road- Staffing has been the largest challenge.

We currently have a great staff and we have several employees who have been employed over 4 years. However, we have also had a number of employees who never showed up for their first day or who didn’t come back after the first day.

According to Christian, after almost five years of recruitment, he has fine-tuned his interviewing and training techniques to ensure that more and more new hires will be successful as a MaidPro Professional.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the MaidPro Oak Park story. Tell us more about the business.
We are MaidPro Oak Park we are the premier residential home cleaning business in the near west suburbs. We are known for a superior clean with licensed and bonded cleaning professionals and excellent customer service. As new Oak Park residents in 1995, we were advised that Oak Parker’s support Oak Park businesses and we tried to support Oak Park business for 20 years before we opened our business. We believe we are the community we serve and we are supplying a much-needed service.

We are different because our staff participates in a structured training program after which they have supervised in the field training. We also guarantee satisfaction and will perform a re-clean if a client is unhappy. All our Pros are paid above minimum wage, receive paid sick time and paid vacation days after their first year.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Wow, this question surprised us. I don’t know if we believe in luck. We believe in positioning ourselves to be ready for everything. I know it sounds cliche, but life isn’t about what happens to you, it is about how you respond to what happens to you. We have had unexpected things happen in life and in business.

We had someone compromise our checking account last year. We had one day in the beginning when all of our employees quit and we didn’t have any employees. But yet we still persisted, I don’t think we would call any of that bad luck, but we have been extremely blessed.
