Today we’d like to introduce you to Geoff Benge.
Geoff, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a small child, I would constantly get in trouble for taking things apart. At about four or five, I started to play guitar. A lifetime of bad choices and here I am.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Guitarists tend to sleep late and get their money from their girlfriends, so I guess I might have picked a career with a more stable clientele. As a broke kid, I worked in the local guitar shop to pay for my lessons and guitar addiction. I spent years setting up guitars, gluing bridges and headstocks, installing electronics and learning the minutia of the ever changing trends and styles in the industry. Most repair shops are there to benefit retail operations and not really customers, so there are potential conflicts of interest. My goal is to restore the instrument – not try to buy it or sell someone a new one or do a cheap job if they don’t have a lot of money. I buy and sell a few instruments as they come to me but it’s not why I get up every day. I got tired of working for liars, racists, and homophobes, so for 14 years, I have worked by myself for a lot of people I consider to be my friends and cohorts and I meet new ones every day.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Geoff Benge’s Guitar Shop/Chicagoguitarrepair.com story. Tell us more about the business.
I restore and build fretted musical instruments. I specialize in making them play, feel, look and sound their best. I am proud to have been an Independent-local-crafter-repurposed- decades before hipsters thought they invented it. What sets me apart is experience, knowledge, skill, and attention to detail that takes a lot of patience and a lifetime to learn.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Met my beautiful, perfect wife in my shop.
