Today we’d like to introduce you to Ali Phillips.
Ali, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started my business 15 years ago and worked hard to get where I am. I assisted a wedding planner for a summer and she became a mentor of mine and encouraged me to start my wedding business. My background was in logistics and transportation and I had never dreamed of being a wedding planner of an entrepreneur but here I am and I love it. When I started my business, there was not as much available education or seminars that you can attend or see online now, so I networked with other event professionals to learn all aspects of weddings and wedding design.
I think that hard work, networking and integrity are crucial to your career and is the only way to stay competitive in the market.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Ha, is life ever a smooth road or ride? Life is full of obstacles and challenges and that is what makes it so exciting! Bring on the bumps in the road! I have viewed each and every challenge and obstacle with a positive approach.
I challenge myself every day to stay ahead of the curve by attending seminars, training sessions (both in-person and online) and conferences. “Always be learning” is a motto of mine!
Having been in the wedding and events business for fifteen years, I have seen so much change in the way we interact with couples and potential clients. I was one of the first wedding planners to blog in Chicago and was able to share my “voice” with people via my writing. Now, there are so many great ways to share with the world by continuing to blog, but also using Pinterest, Instagram, Instagram Stories and YouTube to share my work! I love the new ways of sharing my personality with the world and I continue to embrace that as I move into the next 15 years of my business. I also have found that working with online planning tools with my potential clients and current clients is what they are looking for when working with a wedding planner.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Engaging Events by Ali – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Engaging Events is based in Chicago but I offer full wedding & design coordination in the Midwest and all over the world! I pride myself on focusing not only on planning weddings and events in the Windy City but also all over the world and have worked in over 20 different countries. So, I have my passport ready to go and will travel for my client’s weddings and events. !
What’s my secret? Strong organizational and negotiating skills, ability to multitask gracefully under pressure, and appreciation for the art of customer service. Those are invaluable in working with vendors, staying within a budget, and creating beautiful, flawless events for my clients. And I like to have fun doing so in the process!! My goal is to make each event feel effortless, organic and utterly memorable — and carefully thought-out, behind-the-scenes planning is the only way to make this a reality for my couples.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I will continue to plan gorgeous weddings all over the world and in my home-town of Chicago! I have started a business coaching and educational side of my business to help event professionals in the industry take their businesses and lives to the next level. I want to help those individuals have the best business and learn to become the amazing entrepreneurs they can be.. With one-on-one coaching and mastermind program, I look to help others succeed.
