Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Meyers and Simone Garcia.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Lindsey and Simone. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Beauty & Brawn Art Gallery / Sinergia Arts is really the result of growth meeting opportunity and a good dose of Universal magic.
Lindsey: I opened Beauty & Brawn Art Gallery in Logan Square in March of 2012 as a passion project- establishing the first true gallery in the neighborhood. Beauty & Brawn was originally conceptualized to be a mixed-use and multi-disciplinary space, and my mission has always been fully and wholeheartedly rooted in supporting art, community, connectivity, arts education, public art access and philanthropy.
As an artist, gallerist and curator, I desired to create a unique space where everyone was welcome to join in the creative conversations we were having and to facilitate relationships between artist and viewer. Although the gallery was fruitful and my work there extremely rewarding, incredible opportunities began presenting themselves for me to curate elsewhere, and collaboration became more a part of my everyday projects and programming. As much as I loved being a solo entrepreneur, I was always hoping to find a partner who saw art and the world as I did. And then one random day in March of 2016, a friend and fellow curator said she wanted to introduce me to someone looking for some art help.
Simone: In 2016, during my tenure as co-curator and media director with 15th & West Gallery, I produced the highly acclaimed exhibition, “Once Upon A Wall: Infinite Life.” The scope and scale of it was absolutely incredible. Given its success, I wanted to expose this collection to an even greater audience. Over a drink our friend stated “you have to meet Lindsey” with the hope that she and I would be able to figure something out together. After connecting over art, our extremely creative and similarly focused conversations continued to flow. With a year plus under our collective belts, the ideas and creativity between us not only continue to evolve and progress but we are constantly heading in new and exciting directions.
Unbeknownst to us, one rainy night in Pilsen became the catalyst for a completely new life and career trajectory.
Simone: Sinergia Arts (Sinergia being Spanish for synergy) grew out of various opportunities where our curation was allowed to flourish through the implementation of increasingly exploratory and experiential programing. Our partnerships with fellow creatives took what we were looking to do to a level far beyond our expectation. At the end of December 2016, we made the decision to close our physical space and move our gallery exclusively online. Although the decision was truly bittersweet, it made the most sense from a business perspective- as we were curating almost entirely off-site.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Lindsey: Nothing about being an entrepreneur and a business owner has been easy to say the least. Many of the same difficulties which were present when I opened the gallery are issues we work through every day- sufficient access to capital, ample marketing dollars, promotion and brand awareness, creating a unique and desirable product, etc. Our work ethic, integrity and tenacity definitely help offset the challenging moments because we have passion and believe in what we are doing without doubt or self-consciousness.
And then there is deciphering who has your best interest in mind when getting involved in partnerships and collaborations. Making sure you are getting properly credited for your work has been a recurring theme and struggle as of late as well. I do believe it gets easier to determine how a project and/or relationship is going to unfold, although we have had our fair share of surprises. Simone and I have a very fluid and intuitive sense about our own partnership and our projects. And we trust one another implicitly and encourage each other to take risks and to continue to push boundaries- that has really created the ultimate foundation for our success. It just works.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Beauty & Brawn Art Gallery and Sinergia Arts – what should we know?
Simone: Beauty & Brawn Art Gallery / Sinergia Arts is a multi-disciplinary curatorial and creative production company. Overarchingly, we help manage relationships with art as Lindsey mentioned. On the curatorial front, we work with anyone from developers to interior designers to private collectors, implementing desired visions and ideas. These projects can take shape as anything from interior/exterior murals or home staging, to the perfect piece that ties a space together in the lobby of a commercial property.
While not too dissimilar in concept, Sinergia Arts is focused on experiential curation, place making and event production. This aspect of our business involves a variety of elements including: spatial activation, where we take unconventional spaces and utilize them for events and other activities; experiential deployments, meaning that we help bring richer experiences to festivals, fundraisers and any other type of event you can imagine; and digital media and marketing strategies. And as our partnership has grown, our relationships and experiences have led us into the forays of public space design, the blending of art and technology and public
The nature of Beauty & Brawn Art Gallery and Sinergia Arts is such that, because of the many disciplines involved, the lines between the two are often blurred. Regardless of the medium in which we curate, it is essential that we ensure that our clients and their investments are properly and appropriately represented. And we are always seeking the opportunity to leave the places and spaces we curate more beautiful than we found them.
One simple philosophy runs deep throughout whatever we do, and it is simply, “Art is for everyone”. Anyone who works with us will tell you that.
Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years? Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc?
Lindsey: That is a very long and complicated conversation and one we are always having! Our industry is constantly changing, and as such you must keep to trend while maintaining your own vision and perspective. And because we are involved in a myriad aspects of art, curation and event production, we are always looking for new ways to get work executed and facilitated with maximum viewing exposure, and if possible, with an element of global consciousness and social awareness.
Large scale murals are becoming increasingly popular, and clients are purchasing more work online and now have access to works from all over the world thanks to Instagram and the like. The middle range price point in and of art sales has changed dramatically, almost like the diminishing of the middle class if you will, brick and mortar spaces are facing much difficulty in relying solely on art sales, we could go on for days…It is imperative to keep reinventing your ideas and adapting them to generate revenue while ultimately respecting the craft at hand. Art and supporting artists is, and will always be, our driving force.
Lindsey and Simone: Our hope is that art continues to be valued and appreciated as a driver of culture, change and social evolution. It is a difficult industry to exist in and one that’s ever changing. We are honored to be at the forefront of this industry and to be making the creative contributions that we are.
