Meet Anna Wu of A.Sweets Girl

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Wu.

Anna, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
A.Sweets Girl Cupcake Truck first hit the roads of Chicago on October 1, 2015. But prior to the cupcake truck business, I have been humbly blessed with a clientele list for custom cakes and dessert catering services. I remembered my first paying client was for a custom adult themed cake for a bachelorette party. The cake was so well received, referrals started pouring in! From there, I was requested to create the most elaborate cakes to the simplicity of fun cupcakes for birthdays, baby showers, bachelor/bachelorette parties and weddings.

As my clientele list grew, I knew I had a great product and wanted to share them to everyone in Chicago. So of course a cupcake truck made the most sense so that I can be mobile and share my sweetness throughout the city of Chicago. To this day, I have been able to share my cupcakes and cakes throughout Chicago. Although I mainly service the Downtown area by the Art Institute, I have been booked at events in the Southside to the Northside, Westside and even in surrounding suburban neighborhoods. At the moment, I operate the cupcake truck by myself. It is the best feeling when I meet people of all ages, regulars and new, run up to them truck in excitement. It is so fulfilling to chat with them and see that they enjoy the cupcakes and sweets I serve them!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think going on any adventure with a smooth road will be so boring! Of course anyone would hope to start and run a business smoothly with no obstacles. But that is not the way life works. I’m glad I had ran into the challenges that came my way because they made me learn and grow as a person and a small business owner. I think most of my challenges are similar to all business owners. The main initial challenge I had was the power source. As every food truck owner would agree, “The generator”! After several months of dealing with a bad generator that kept dying out on me and prevented daily operations days at a time, I took a hit and invested in a good commercial generator. It was a smart business decision and definitely worth the investment!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about A.Sweets Girl – what should we know?
A.Sweets Girl is an independently owned cupcake truck business who also offer dessert/sweets catering and custom cake services. I offer a great selection on my cupcake truck menu which includes the specialty Matcha Tea and the S’mores cupcake which was featured on Chicago’s Best TV! The all-time best selling Red Velvet cupcake with A.Sweets Girl signature buttercream is like no other. People describe it as taking a bite of a cloud.

In the short 2 years, A.Sweets Girl has become the iconic pink cupcake truck in downtown. People spot the bright pink from blocks away and I see them running up to the truck in excitement! With the biggest smile on their face, they would tell me “I’m so glad I caught you today. You have the best cupcakes!” The cupcake truck has a set daily schedule of noon-6pm (schedule changes seasonally). But very often people would miss me because I would sell out early in the day as I bake in small batches daily to maintain quality and freshness. I think being able to offer the best baked fresh daily cupcakes is ideal!

A.Sweets Girl has become a popular option to book for exclusive private events including birthdays, weddings, bar mitzvahs and company outings. It’s definitely something unique, fun and different to have a pink truck pull up to your event and serve sweet treats to your guests!

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I have so much admiration from my fans, my “Sweeties”! A.Sweets Girl cannot exist without the continued support of my new and my loyal clients. Shoutout to my Sweeties, “Thank you!”

There is so much love and encouragement I get from my family, my friends and loved ones. They have and always will be there for me emotionally to help me through hard times and celebrate with me on my accomplishments. My parents had been financially helpful in the initial start of my business. Along with my personal investments, they allowed me to take the leap into pursuing my goal. I honestly have to say, without them this will all still be only a dream… The ones who have been with me along my journey understand all the hard work, the determination and most importantly my passion for what I love to do.
