Meet Angelique Warner of GoGoVie in South Loop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelique Warner.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Active moms have a lot to do. Sitting for 30 minutes while the baby is feeding, 1-year-old twins are potty training, a 4 year old is flipping around, and 14 others are doing ‘God knows what’, should not be one of them! As an active mother of four, then ages four and younger, also with up to 14 other children living in our home; 5 years at a group home and 11 years at a boarding school, I’ve lived through the ultimate active lifestyle and created a Premium Baby Carrier. In fact, I am the first African American woman to manufacture a baby carrier in the USA! The vision for GoGoVie came in a moment of need. I was breastfeeding my baby and my 1-year-old twins had an emergency potty moment; at the same time, of course! My four-year-old son was very active and busy playing around the house at the time. My husband was at work. I desperately needed my hands! After unsuccessful attempts to break the baby’s latch to help the twins to the potty I had to do what Mama’s do… get those twins to the potty with one hand and hold my breastfeeding baby with the other! After successfully completing this task, I saw a vision of a baby carrier that held my baby in the cradle position, there was built-in privacy, and both my hands were free. What I envisioned was not on the market, so I set out to create it. Because we parented 18 children, I decided to wait until the baby was 3 years old and in preschool before beginning this journey of creating a baby carrier. I put pen to paper in January 2008 and 8 years to the month, January 2016, I had a viable, sellable product. This was quite the journey, as I cannot draw nor sew. All I had was a vision. And with great faith and perseverance, I birthed the vision known today as GoGoVie Premium Baby Carrier.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This journey was not smooth at all! There were the obvious obstacles of not knowing how to draw nor sew, not having a design background, not knowing the patent process, lacking the expertise in the product industry, and the challenge of working with very limited capital, to name a few.

But God! No matter the frustrations, financial obstacles or setbacks, I had unwavering faith that what I saw would come to pass somehow, someway. I went through several seamstresses and lots of money developing many prototypes which landed my family in a financial crisis.

GoGoVie – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
While in the research and development phase, I discovered that what I thought were 7 different baby carriers ended up being one baby carrier with 7 carrying positions. This innovative design landed GoGoVie the proud position as the first hybrid sling and soft structured buckled carrier in the U.S. boasting an unprecedented 7 unique carrying positions and me as the 1st Black woman to create and manufacture a baby carrier in the U.S.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success as living a life that’s pleasing to God by maximizing the potential He has stored up in you. I look for opportunities, not obstacles. Every step brings me closer to my destiny. The vision of the fulfilled promise is forever in view. This vision keeps me locked into the process. My job is to enjoy the journey and learn all I can along the way. This way the manifestation of the vision is that much sweeter because of it. One example of this is the reward you get as a parent. After having raised your children with all you had to give; love, stability, faith, morals, education, discipline, work ethic, hope, you marvel at the young adults they’ve grown to be because of what you deposited in them. This moment would not have been so sweet had you not enjoyed the process.
