Today we’d like to introduce you to Dondre Smith.
Dondre, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m consider myself a visionary more than anything. I’m 22 years old and I’m a college drop out.
I taught myself everything I know about designing and running a business. I learned a lot by trial & error and I’m still learning. I went to the University of Iowa the last 3 years studying pre pharmacy. I was accepted into the 4 year Pharmacy school program, but I decided to drop out after a redirection in my life’s calling from God.
I started this brand my freshman year of college in 2013. Since then I’ve been blessed to get support all over the world including London, Paris, Italy, Germany, Australia and Spain to name a few. I am currently doing everything for my business and I am trying to assemble a team so I can spend more time just designing.
I’m really big on meaning and purpose. I believe God created us all for a specific reason. It’s our job to figure out our life’s purpose by doing a little self-reflecting and soul searching. Once we realize our gifts and know what we are passionate about, we have no excuse but to work on our craft. I believe doing what you love everyday is the only way to live a truly fulfilled and successful life.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It seemed smooth at first, but then I realized how much work it actually is running a business. At first, it wasn’t a business to me, it was just a hustle and passion. But I needed to get organized so I formed an LLC and opened an official business account just last year.
To be honest, it’s always been a struggle. Even now I struggle, but I’m grateful that God always provides my basic needs in life. My family sacrificed so much to make sure we had just enough in our lives. That’s why I work so hard so I can make sure that they can experience a life of abundance before they leave this earth.
One of the biggest struggles I faced along the way was dropping out of college. When I lived in Iowa City, I felt so limited running my business there even though I got a lot of support. It wasn’t easy to decide to drop out of college and disappoint my family, but I’m content because I know I’m following God’s direction for my life.
Recently, I’ve dealt with fraudulent activity in the business. I’m recovering though of course. I just learned to take everything one day at a time and to walk in faith always.
ALMVGHTY – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
ALMVGHTY is a versatile, purpose driven street wear brand for the culture. Pronounced “almighty.” Every garment is cut & sewn (handcrafted) from scratch. I hand pick the fabric, sketch the design on illustrator, create a tech pack, then have my pattern maker sew up the sample.
Every piece is designed with meaning and revolves around a story. I pay close attention to details and functionality. Every collection is birthed from a purpose and is followed by a short film.
I want to use ALMVGHTY to create a cultural movement that influences my generation to pursue what their passionate about. Curating events focused on fashion, art, and music allows me to continually push the culture and positive vibes.
After throwing my first successful fashion show in Wicker Park back in January, I’m excited to announce the next one very soon.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is living the life you always imagined and dreamt about and turning it into an everyday reality. I would consider myself successful once I become financially free. I know a self-sustaining, systemized business is the only sure way to achieve financial freedom.
I want to be able to live comfortably and to wake up each day knowing I can spend my time however I want. I want to be able to provide for my family and make a positive change in the world.
Everyone defines success differently. But we can all agree that once you accomplished all your major goals in life, that’s when you know you’ve reached success.
