Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicja Burek.
Alicja, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Since early childhood, I developed a strong love for fashion, events and social functions by making clothes and organizing ‘’royal balls’’ for my Barbie dolls.
Originally from Poland, I moved to Chicago 10 years ago, after getting a Bachelor’s Degree in teaching. It didn’t take me long to realize that there were other things waiting for me. I was eager to learn, to explore and to experience new things.
After moving to the USA, I did not pursue my teaching career instead I focused on modeling, fashion and the hospitality industry.
Beginning a modeling career in 2008 gave me the exposure to various industries, events, and functions that ignited my passion for my career today. This foundation allowed me to quickly learn the ins and outs of the fashion, hospitality and marketing industries. I also became extremely passionate about traveling, diverse cultures and traditions.
6 years ago, I opened Alicja Events, an event planning company, which over a few short years has grown into one single production with 3 main divisions: Alicja Events, Alicja Models and Talents and Alicja Travel.
My first event, that I produced, was a fundraiser for my brother, who lost his house, belongings, and business in a fire. The grief and hopelessness were unbearable. Through shear ingenuity yet without much experience, I decided to organize a fundraiser with a fashion show, live auction, and raffle in order to collect funds for him and his wife. The event was a great success! We were able to raise $6,000.00 that evening. On that night, I realized that everything is possible if you believe in an idea and work hard to achieve it. The feedback from attendees pushed me even harder to create more unforgettable events and experiences.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting from scratch is never easy especially being a foreigner who faces many challenges and obstacles not only with the business itself but all the way trying to prove to be good enough to fit in with this kind of environment. The whole process required a lot of hard work, commitment, and persistence.
I was always mature for my age however as a young female business owner I felt judged and underestimated quite often.
Being a small business owner and an entrepreneur you have to learn many skills and wear many hats at the same time. In addition, you have to be a quick learner and know how to efficiently and effectively adjust to every situation especially if plan A and B fail there is no room for panic but plan C and D. Most importantly, you have to stay on top of new innovations, trends and technology as the customers require more nowadays than ever before.
Tell us about your business/company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
Alicja Events went through many changes throughout the years and took a few different routes along the way. We went from producing small local events to large national ones. We bring creative masterminds together to craft bespoke events and experiences. We also take a great pride in representing great talent, models and artists for any clients need.
As mentioned before there are 3 main divisions of the company: Alicja Events that specializes in social, corporate and fashion events, production, branding, marketing, and coordination. Alicja Models and Talents that represents fashion, hair, and trade show models, brand ambassadors, entertainers, choreographers, artists, DJ and talent of any kind. Lastly, Alicja Travel specializes in any travel needs; destination weddings, incentive trips, getaways and group tours.
Quite often, I refer the company to an Event Concierge that takes care of all event production and marketing needs.
Working as a model, brand ambassador and sales rep for many years definitely helped me to understand the industry, people’s needs and behaviors better. It was a huge advantage that set me apart from the competition.
Moreover, coming from a European background gave me a different creative edge and perspective that can be noticed in everything we do from client’s communication to aesthetic production and execution.
Lessons learned if you had to start over, what would you have done differently?
I am a strong believer in the notion that everything happens for a reason. We meet people for a reason; we get into situations for a reason as well. Through making mistakes and trying things out we can learn and most importantly grow. Only through testing the water we can learn how to swim. It would be great to know the things I know now 5 years ago but I wouldn’t change a thing, as I wouldn’t be where I am today.
The biggest lesson that I learned over the years is how to balance personal life with the business without getting overwhelmed too often.
