Meet Todd Eichholz of A&A Paving Contractors in Roselle

Today we’d like to introduce you to Todd Eichholz.

Todd, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We like to think of ourselves as a brand new 55 year old paving company.

The company began in the 1960’s as a painting contractor, painting lines in parking lots. Bob Olson, the company founder, actually developed one of the first sealcoating machines in our area. Three years ago, starting with a long lunch, I joined Bob Olson as co-owner of A&A Paving Contractors. I was looking for new challenges and Bob was looking for a partner and eventual path to retirement. Throughout those first few months, we utilized state-of-the-art technology and innovative management concepts to reenergize the company and assure long-term success.

With a tremendous amount of faith and diligence, our entire A&A Paving team has transformed the company, and ourselves, into a culture of success. Our company growth has been accomplished by treating people fairly, getting involved in serving the greater community and making time for our families.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We certainly had challenges when we began this journey 3 years ago to revitalize the company. We knew we had to shake the company pretty hard to make the kinds of changes that were necessary for growth. Our efficiency was bogged down, and newer technology techniques were introduced quickly. We improved the computer hardware throughout the company by upgrading all computers as well as providing two monitors to everyone so they could see 2 screens at the same time. In addition, we provided all team members with iPhones and iPads, including Apple training. Now most of our work is paperless.

During the initial technology transformations, I was met with quite a bit of employee resistance. Everyone on the team was being pushed out of their comfort zone. Everyone, except Bob! Don’t let anyone tell you technology is a young person’s game. Bob learned everything we were introducing before everyone else — and even set up the foundation of our new bidding system.

Beyond the technology enhancements, we made significant improvements to our marketing strategy. By shifting from a one-size-fits-all strategy to an industry-specific marketing approach (industrial, retail, etc.), we continue to learn about the pain points within these industries and address these areas with customers, often creating videos that show we understand their projects’ challenges, and we know how to address them.

We believe this new approach has helped us tremendously in a highly competitive industry, dependent on seasonal work. We are honored to be chosen from over 20,000 paving contractors nationwide as the 2017 Contractor of the Year.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
At A&A Paving Contractors, Inc., we specialize in asphalt paving, sealcoating and concrete services.

We invest in the leadership of our team and this has been instrumental to our success. Every person at A&A Paving is a leader and provides value to the company and the customers we service. Our on-site excellence produces most of our referrals. Our team works in complete synchronization on the job and people continually notice. We often hear, “I saw your crews working and it was amazing to watch them, they don’t even need to talk .. they just instinctively know and anticipate each other’s next move with the equipment and trucks.” This really reinforces the leadership development we invest with each member of the team.

We believe true leadership is servant leadership, which means leading by example. We are passionate about our support for “Stepping Stones for Women of Domestic Violence,” where we work to provide emotional support, financial assistance, career opportunities and a safe environment for victims of domestic violence. Our efforts include acting as a sounding board for ideas, helping with in-service programs and fundraising. We are also very involved with the Roselle Police Association Foundation, the Roselle Chamber of Commerce, and Willow Creek’s Global Leadership Summits.

What were you like growing up?
I absolutely loved animals growing up – and still do! In grammar school, I worked at Mrs. Noah’s Pets in Roselle making $1.25/hour.

My grandfather was my best friend, teacher and inspiration. When I was 9 years old, he began to teach me about his commercial real estate development business. For the next 14 years I loved learning from him, until his passing. My commitment to A&A Paving, as well as providing service to others, are characteristics I learned from my grandfather.
