Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke Ingram.
Brooke, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My mom was also a stylist and, from a very young age, I would watch in fascination every Saturday as she worked with clients in her home studio. I moved from observing to cutting and restyling my Barbies soon after. In high school, I was the official party/dance stylist for my sister and her friend’s. There was never any doubts that I was going to beauty school and do hair. For me, its all about clean lines and strong shapes so I was naturally drawn to the Vidal Sassoon technique. I studied at their London Academy after school and those lessons continue to inspire my work. In fact, I consider it one of my greatest influences. Over the last 20 years, I’ve been perfecting my technical style of cutting. As soon as extensions started to become popular in the early 2000’s, I knew this trend was here to stay and began specializing … and I love it!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Yes, there are bumps in the road and learning from those mistakes are what defines your next chapter. I’ve experienced slow seasons and business changes but my passion for hair has always seen me through. As an educator, I am constantly reminding my students to stay strong, be in control of your business, never stop learning and find your inspiration. I also believe that you need to find something outside of work to ground you. For me, its yoga and having a strong belief that everything is happening as it should. One of the reasons I love being a teacher is seeing people grow, push themselves and make it to the other side. To watch my students succeed is my reward for all the obstacles along the way.
What should we know about your business? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in extensions, haircuts and bridal. I am most known for my extension work. So many people are doing extensions today and the market is flooded with hair companies, but my experience has taught me so much about quality and color matching. My clients love how natural I make their extensions look — the placement is so important. I find my work speaks for itself and I get a lot of referrals from happy clients. Being a seasoned professional with such a strong technical background, an understanding of lines and placement and a commitment to education really sets me me apart in a crowded market.
Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
I come from a family of nearly all women and was taught from an early age to be strong and independent. As a young girl, I was surrounded by so much powerful, female energy. We had a deep sense of unity in our family, too. We stick together and help each other succeed. I was also taught to not let our failures knock us down. Because of the way I was raised, I have a real team mentality and am always encouraging my colleagues and students to do their best and push through the hard times, especially my girls!
